A photo of whole piece and a closeup of the mark might help to jog someone's memory.

What happened to Leif's responses? I know I saw them last night on my phone but now they seem to be gone.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's monkeypod wood. It is about the color of teak but the grain is different.

Also, I'm pretty sure that is a leaf shape. There are lots and lots of leaf-shaped bowls made of monkeypod wood that came out of Japan and other Asian countries. A lot of them have handles that are meant to represent stems, so they're more recognizable as leaves, but not all of them did.

Somewhere on this forum there's a discussion of the relationship between Denmark and Japan as far as design. I think it had to do with a trade agreement between the two countries for teak, which Japan had and Denmark wanted.

I don't know how a couple of my responses on different threads got deleted.

Anyway, I said that this is not teak.

(And I am pretty sure Japan does not grow any teak.)

I know, my pictures were gone this morning, too. I had to re-post. Thank you for the information, I've seen smaller bowls similar to this one, but never one with a mark. The link between Japanese and Danish design has always fascinated me; I love the simplicity and organic forms found in both.

You're right, Leif---no teak in Japan. But I am pretty sure that I've read here about Japan figuring into the teak trade with Denmark somehow---maybe they competed for it? Maybe I'm hallucinating?

There has been a lot written about the Japanese influence in Danish design in general. A much less significant part of their joint history is how Japan churned out a lot of near-copies of well-known Danish designs, for export, like the Zooline animal figures, one of which is the monkey that very closely resembles Bojeson's. I've also seen at least one vintage Japanese knockoff of Wegner's folding lounge chair . But then, they produced a lot of near-copies and "inspired by" items in many styles for a long time. That was a whole other thing.

Thank you. If you can recommend any particular books on the subject I'd appreciate it. I came across a dissertation online about Shibui influences on post WW II American modernism, very interesting.

Your wood bowl/dish could also a just be look alike of the Oceana line designed by Russel Wright from the 1930s

If you google "Danish Japanese design influence" (without quotes) you'll get some reading material quite readily. This book seems like a good place start. (Haven't read it myself but you can google reviews, too. There may well already be a discussion of it somewhere on this board, too.)
