Thanks, you got me googling - and I don't understand what I found. This 1961 ad from the danish-modern.co.uk site shows a Kai Kristiansen design for FM - and the same FM insignia states Fornem Mobelkunst. SO what gives? This doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Hi We are talking about one of the best Danish , furniture makers , FM stand for Fornem Mobelkunst, they made furniture for many designers including Kai kristiansen .
Now guys did you realised two new things on the label :
1- New Furniture. In the 50-60 never had this so this is a label for the latest production maybe early seventies .
2- HJ This stand for :Hone and Jones LTD
Hadfield Rd ,Cardiff Wales CF118AQ,UK : this company dealt with Danish furniture imports ,furniture shops.
So this label was created for the uk market only . Any way FM/Kk are the best ,just bought a shelving system with boards amazing !!! Collected from ... Cardiff. 28-3-2021

Relatively recent looking nightstand, but I'm curious what New Furniture refers to, and whether anyone knows who FM and/or JH/HJ is? I'm guessing the answer is already on this forum somewhere, but I can't seem to search for two letter words. Thanks!

Hi Max,
Thanks for bringing up this old thread, as there is certainly still confusion on this company name. Over the last few years, here is my understanding on the company name and advertising:
1) the company started out as S.B Feldballes Mobelfabrik. There are plenty of old ads which show Feldballes spelled out, with Kai Kristensen designs and the FM logo on the same page.
2) at some point, the company started using "Fornem Mobelkunst" in their advertising. I do not speak Danish, but Google Translate tells me that it means "Distinguished Furniture Art". While there may be a more accurate translation of words, this appears to me to have been the company slogan at the time. There was a period where the slogan was incorporated into the logo, which is confusing as it appears the letters in the logo refer to the slogan and not the company name.
3) at a later point, Feldballes either officially or unofficially changed their name to FM, or FM Mobler, or FM Reolmobler (shelving manufacturer), and starting using "FM" in advertising, along with the same old logo. This made it even more confusing to know what FM originally stood for. Hansen and Guldborg did something similar when they rebranded to HG Mobler or Furniture. Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but both FM and HG made shelving wall units.
4) I believe "New Furniture" was a fairly late exporting/sales company, whose logo concept make it easy to swap manufacturer logos in and out as needed. I was not aware until your post that those logos also extended to importers on the other end.
Here are two catalog pages from the later FM years:
One cover shows the logo and slogan together, with the larger text saying "FM reolmobler". There is extensive use of FM reolmobler within this catalog, but no other mention of "Fornem Mobelkunst" after the cover.
The other brochure shows another name, "RegalMobel", which translates to either "regular furniture" if one word, or "regal furniture" if two words. Funny how a space can make quite a difference in meaning. This along with other name variations found elsewhere indicates that FM decided to change the second word in their branding to target a specific market.
@cdsilva Regalmöbel is the German expression for shelving furniture. No two meanings, no matter how many words. But thanks for this extensive background work.
