Yes, it launched in 53 and sank in 56 just south of Nantucket island after running into the Swedish ship the Stockholm.  It was one of the top shipwreck dives for years but apparently it's now just a disintegrated lump.  Many divers took home china and silver but I didn't see any reports of anyone with a sofa or coffee table.

@mark737

Actually, that explains the larger size of your table, it has been in water for too long and is puffy now.

@mvc  That will be the story when it's time to sell!  It's about as accurate as all these dealers saying it was made by Domus Nova in 1927.

Exactly, the table has a dramatic history, produced by the Italian fascists in 1927, then attacked and sunk by Fidel Castro in 1956, and finally heroical saved for aesthetic reasons by Mark in 2020!

@mvc. Short of putting on some deep sea diving gear , I do not see how I can help. On the other hand, I will keep a lookout for this table in any relevant literature I happen to chance upon, from the comfort of my own home. I guess that makes me whats called an "armchair expert"/archaeologist 🧐 😉

@mvc @lexi  Okay, a new clue for you bloodhounds.  My table would appear to be Dutch, or least there are a number of similar tables in Holland.  The table in the photo is listed by a Dutch dealer and I found a few others like it , also in Holland.  As you can see it has the same markings on the underside, same top,  and a similar quality and style.  I found a number of unmarked Dutch tables of a similar style, most labeled as  "in the style of" Louis Van Teeffelen for Webe.  My  guess is there was some other Dutch maker who made all of these mystery tables.  Maybe one of our Dutch experts, like @wesemael perhaps, can help us out.

@wesemael

In my opinion it doesn't look dutch. What do you think?

@wesemael  It looks more like an ugly German design-accident from the 50s.

@mark737  Mark, please do a more interesting task for the bloodhounds next time. 😎

This one, which appears to have a very similar reversible top, was listed by a Dutch dealer (Van Ons) as "Danish style" but made in The Netherlands c 1960.  No maker listed.

@mvc  It will be an interesting night, no doubt.  Florida, and North Carolina results start coming in in about 2 hours and they will be strong indicators as to the end result.  How late are you planning to stay up tonight?
