I think Maarten is correct again that the chance of these chairs being legitimate IK design is slim to none. While the similarities are obvious, the details and construction just do not compare. Vintage knockoffs is the safe bet. "In the style of" would be the kindest description.
sorry about that last comment I had to rush off. what i was trying to say was that i did find other IK-chairs with tacks on them. the white colored chairs above in the last comment. Someone mentioned that she...Inger Klingenberg... was married to Ross Littell. So there is an American connection. Does anyone know if American furniture companies could have imported them or did American companies really rip off designs like that.
Well, now that we've bashed poor Bear's find thoroughly to shit, I must say that I still consider it not unattractive, likely comfortable, in remarkable condition, and, overall, a quite practical set perfectly suited to a middle-class suburban American home. I wouldn't be at all ashamed to have it in my house.
If I'm not mistaken, the originals were relatively rare in the US at the time even in the high-end urban markets where supply was limited. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the mysterious producer of this set could have much more easily done worse.
Hey, American furniture companies weren't the only shameless ripper-offers back in the day! I can't tell you how many old wannabe Jacobsen 7 chairs i saw in Denmark in the late 90s in thrift stores and flea markets. And we all know about the Papa bear chairs, Wegner round chairs, and more. Not that that excuses any of them.
