What the heck is this? It's 16" high, solid beech, and is flat on both ends so it's not a candlestick. The quality of workmanship is very nice, the wood is smooth with no lathe marks anywhere that I can see. No marks, either. Maybe someone's woodworking assignment for a class? It had a nice sheen to it and I kinda assumed it was lacquered but when I went over it with a little Murphy's Oil Soap on a paper towel to remove the grime, the sheen rinsed off very easily. That makes me think it had a soap finish.

It was only $2 at a thrift store. I passed on it a few days ago but today it was still there which I took as a sign (not really) that it should be mine.

Anyone have a clue? I sure don't.

Not a clue! Possibly one of a pair for a mantle piece? It looks sculptural enough to be an objet d

Looks like a spindle that would draw strands together. Is the thick veneer end cap covering something?

AHA! thanks, waffle, that makes a lot of sense. I guess the spine is supposed to go between the middle bumps.
