Hello everyone,
I’m looking for help identifying this mysterious armchair.
It appears to be from the 1950s or early 60s, with a very distinctive mid-century modern design. The upholstery is currently in black vinyl (or possibly early faux leather), featuring a grid-like "chocolate squares" tufting that might evoke Arne Norell or even some designs reminiscent of Eames or Eero Saarinen — but the curved, organic shape of the back and arms also suggests influence from Marco Zanuso.
The chair has a sculptural silhouette, thin metal legs with the rear legs slightly splayed, and a high back with integrated armrests that flow in one continuous curve. It's incredibly comfortable, and has a very strong visual presence.
So far, I’ve ruled out common names like Zanuso or Baumman, and haven’t found a match on usual vintage platforms or archives.
If anyone recognizes this piece or knows the designer, manufacturer, or even has seen a similar one before, I’d love to hear from you. Any lead could be really helpful — I’m also considering restoring it in leather and want to be sure it’s worth the investment.
Many thanks in advance for your time and knowledge!
Best,
Marc. O.
