Hi,
I bought this storage/captain's headboard many years ago in Boston. I loved the design and functionality. Not only does the top have the sliding cane doors, but it also folds forward on hinges so that you can store things in the base. A few years ago I was in a vintage furniture store and saw a piece very similar. My friend even commented that it looked like it must've been made by same company. The store owner told us it was a McCobb. I've looked up McCobb headboards and furniture and have seen items very similar, but no exact matches. I've also looked all over my item and find no markings at all. It's very well made, though the finish is not in great shape since I've not taken great care of it, but overall it's in very good condition.
Any way this is a McCobb though there are no markings anywhere?

It looks like a McCobb and probably part of the later line called the Perimeter Group which was added to complement the earlier Planner Group. The early Planner Group have burn marks and later with foil labels which usually falls off eventually or removed early on. There is a Paul McCobb blog spot online that you could check out if you haven't been there, maybe the blogger have vintage Winchendon ads or images to confirm.
@sillyrabbit I came across this old thread while doing some research on McCobb's Perimeter Goup. There's a headboard like yours on Ebay currently and they attribute to George Nelson for Herman Miller in the 50's in primavera. I couldn't find any documentation to confirm but looking at other pieces from that time, it seems like a good possibility. By the way, here's a Perimeter headboard. Like you said, similar but different.
@mark737 - Thanks. I still have the headboard and still occasionally look online for similar pieces. I went to Ebay and did a search, but nothing similar came up. Are you able to post a link?
I don't think they want us posting links to items for sale, but if you go on Ebay and search "George Nelson Headboard" it's one of the four results. Here's one of the pics
