As a maker, I can say that any non-slot head screw or bolt is going to be easier and more fool-proof to use, whether by hand, perhaps with an old spiral-drive tool, an original screw gun (pneumatic, ever ? I don't know) or a modern one. "Automated" assembly -- was that even a dream, c. 1955 ?
The mis-match of color -- of material -- is troubling (visually, certainly) no matter that both materials were in use by the maker at the time; it's amusing to think of other Spear chairs out there with clear-finished beech frames and stained afromosia seat frames. By the way, it's not hard to distinguish the two examples compared above; the non-Spear chair has neither separate seat frame nor arms which extend past the front post . . .
