Hello all,

I have this chair that caught my eye, so I purchased it. My partner hates it, I love it. I say it is a chair and we shouldn't hate, and that all hate stems from not really knowing...you get it.

It has no marks on it but it is really odd, weighs in at about 60 pounds, has an unusual solid wood back section that has fine joinery to "hide" the adjustment equipment, reclines very nicely and is a 4 point base.

The wheels on the base look a great deal like Fritz Hansen type wheel covers, but the base shape also looks a lot like herman miller casting or some steelcase too... I'm totally lost on the piece. Does someone have insight from what they see and can guide me towards where it might have been produced and by who?

Has it been reupholstered? Looks like vinyl and it appears to be in great shape but the dustcover is a matching gold color and looks like a woven fabric, which would be more of the 60s or even 70s than how they are usually down now.

It does look like a better quality base but I don't think either Fritz Hansen or Eames would would produce a chair with a clunky tilt/swivel mechansim like that, especially one that needed an extra bit in back just to conceal it. That looks off to me. I want it to be around the entire base---i mean, the workings are still visible from the sides, right? Or maybe it was less to conceal that to provide a mounting surface for the mechanism. That must be it.

What bothers me most, though--and this may be just the upholsterer in me---are the big tucks in the vinyl at the front corners of the seat, and the thick, uneven welt. Maybe it was reupholstered and the upholsterer found some gold fabric for the dust cover. I dunno. But even if i was redone, that swivel/tilt arrangement isn't the most graceful treatment.

I am 99.99999% sure it's not Danish. Equally sure it's American. But there's always that .00001%.

Thanks for the insight.

I was thinking it had been reupholstered, but I was afraid to peel it back - you never know what will be behind there, good or bad.

The components are not too visible, when viewed from a standing position, but yeah, not as graceful as it could be. I might tomorrow peel away and see what I find I would like to find out why it weighs as much as it does, maybe whats underneath might offer some clues.

Will let you know what I find.

Well, the seat is probably 3/4" plywood, which is heavy. The arms may be boxes made of plywood (vs. a frame with stretched burlap or webbing sides)---dittto for the back. You can tell just by pushing on them with your fingers, or even knocking on them. The tilt mechanism is heavyt and cast aluminum base isn't super light. It all adds up.
