Perhaps you said it best in your initial response, Leif, when you referred to mimicry. We both know that the use of plywood (in this case, custom laminated panels) is not a reliable indicator of quality. Nor is the use of decorative veneers. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, no?
Mark's assessment is valid, IMO. I'm not seeing intent to deceive with these chairs as they were originally conceived. How they are presented on the secondary market is another matter.
