I am going to take a look at a large wall unit today, that the owner claims is "Pedersen & Hansen Viby J Denmark". I am familiar with some of Pedersen and Hansen's accessories like mirrors and desk organizers, they are really beautiful, but I have rarely seen any furniture items, especially case-pieces. I also have never been able to find much information on them as a maker. I would assume that they were a cabinetmaker, due to the quality and volume of pieces I have seen.

The unit I am going to look at is teak. All pieces are 31.5" wide. There are 3 case pieces with solid fronts, 2 with sliding glass, and 4 shelves. Unfortunately the pictures are not very useful. Also, the rails were aparently painted, "to give the appearance of the hanging pieces as floating."

Can anyone shed a little more light on "Pedersen & Hansen of Viby J Denmark", or have any comments on the wall unit?

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

That is System Cado made by Royal System, designed by Poul Cadovius.

Those little drawers inside the desk unit have Afrormosia fronts. And I wouldn't be surprised to discover that underneath the white paint the wall standards are too.

Leif is right, this is a System Cado. I am wondering how the seller came to the obscure Pedersen & Hansen attribution...

Now that is an interesting mystery. Possible one piece of it is the fact that Royal System wall units were not marked very well.

Thank you, Doc and Leif.

I just returned from going to see the units, and you are, not surprisingly, quite correct gentlemen.

It is a Royal System Cado, and had I not been so blinded by the Pedersen and Hansen information, I probably would have figured that out! The seller was just extremely adamant that it was marked P & H. It of course was not marked P&H, with only "Made in Denmark" incised into the wood on all pieces, and a "Kontrol Number" label. Admittedly, the confusion was understandable with the 3 Pedersen and Hansen shelves that were next to the Cado on the wall. They also stated that all pieces had come with the house, and that there was the original bill of sale somewhere that stated they were all Pedersen and Hansen. I told them that if they find the bill of sale to let me know, as it would be nice to have with the units.

In any case, they were nice enough to throw in the Pedersen and Hansen shelves, ... no extra charge, and for the identification inconvenience, you know.

Over all, a nice haul for a Saturday morning.

Thanks Reamie. I am certainly happy, as I have wanted a wall unit for sometime, but they are so expensive, and I just did not expect to find one in the wild for this price.

Leif, you are correct. The interior drawer fronts look to be Afromosia, the boomerang shaped shelf supports also appear to Afromosia. Strangely enough, 4 of 5 wall standards are Afromosia, with the 5th being very light, and looking like Luan. I am sure the lighter one could have been centered in the middle, and look quite striking, flanked by 2 Afromosia ones on either side.

A few more pics of construction details and wood. I will post overall pics once I have them oiled/cleaned up.

Drawer sides and backs are all finger jointed, solid beech. Drawer fronts are either solid, or solid sandwiched with lumber core. Construction of case pieces appears to be lumber core with a pretty thick veneer layer (2-3mm), as well as solid teak and Afromosia.

Only markings are the incised "Made in Denmark" on all but 2 pieces, and this Kontrol label.

And your photos remind me that the drawer pulls are also Afrormosia. (Afrormosia is a lovely wood, but it bugs me when it is used as a miser's teak).

And this is exactly how Royal System pieces are marked. The lack of marking also contributes to the fact that everyone calls the company Cado. And this isn't terribly incorrect, considering as starting around 1970 or so Cado was the parent company of Royal System and France and S
