I've searched high and low on google but cannot find anything with a similar backrest. It was purchased from an estate sale, and the original owner is Japanese. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The seat is woven of paper cord, not rush, which was mostly used on Scandinavian chairs but also some Yugoslavian Danish-style ones and some Italian chairs, too. I don't know if it was used much in Japan--maybe? That particular weave was done in rush long before paper cord existed, though.
The Japanese have been fans of Scandinavian design and vice versa for a long time. The ethnicity of the original owner might not be much of a clue in the end.
