hi all,
picked up this ice bucket for pennies earlier today. when i first saw it i immediately thought quistgaard however, it's got some clear differences from the dansk version. firstly it's made from a single piece of wood (not staved), it's got two joint marks on the side of the handle, and the wooden handle is not morticed into the sides of the bucket but is flush. it's marked underneath but not with a mark that i recognise although, as it is green and round, it did make me think of the digsmed paper mark.
i should point out, and as you will be able to see from one of the pictures, it appears as if it had 'horns' as per the dansk ice bucket, but they have been rather unfortunately removed !
also, i don't think that the lid is original.
given all it's obvious faults it's not going to be worth much but i would still be interested to know the maker if anyone has any idea 🙂
cheers,
jonny
p.s. forgot to mention that it's 37.5cm high and 18cm wide
The point of “staving” together blanks was really because teak was expensive and gluing together smaller piece was much cheaper. This was because there was less waste and it is much easier to dry smaller lumber.
The extreme size of blank required for this ice bucket coupled with the fact that it is almost indistinguishable from a Quistgaard design suggests to me that there was only one place that really combined those two characteristics: Thailand.
