I'm not well versed at all on Eames work, but here is what I know (I think):
- the Eames molded plywood chairs were introduced starting around 1946. Therefore, a listing stating a 1940 production should have been an immediate red flag.
- first production Evans chairs had 5-2-5 screw arrangements on the underside. Herman Miller may have continued this pattern for a short period after taking over production a couple of years later (not sure of the exact year).
- refinishing on old chairs reduces their value. Painting over the screws on the underside probably doesn't help as well.
- those slotted Phillips head screws on the backrest don't look original to me.
- with refinished chairs and newer screws, I'm going to guess that the backrest shock mounts are replacements as well.
I may be wrong on a few of these, and there are plenty of others here that can provide a lot more info. I would recommend redoing your searches on this site to include "Evans", which should attract a lot more relevant threads. Good luck.
