I dragged this out of storage recently. It has not seen the light of day in years. My parents probably bought this at the Georg Jensen store on Bloor Street Toronto in the 1950's. They had a lot of Danish furniture. Perhaps they changed the seat?
I first thought the side rail was birds eye or flamed wood. On closer inspection it looks as if the original seat was cane and that the wood was bleached by the sun around the caning? This is only on one side.
The back rail is a solid piece of oak.
A lovely chair but would appreciate any comments.
Thanks!

I think this is an Illum Wikkelso chair. It is very similar looking to the Round chair by Wegner, but the construction of the two chairs is fairly different.
I think the first way to tell it's not a round chair is the joint in the Wegner round chairs between backrest and armrest are beautiful pointed finger joints. Whereas this is a carved solid piece of wood. Among many other differences, this is always the one I look for.
Wikkelso has to be one of my favourite Danish designers. I love the Round chair as much as anybody, but I probably like this chair equally as much, despite it lacking the same star status.
EDIT: Also, I feel like it could be elm rather than oak, but I'm not sure.
I am sure with the knowledge you've got here you can do some of your own research. I don't think value is supposed to be discussed on this forum I'm afraid.
But it shouldn't be hard to ascertain a rough value. Also value is what someone will pay, so if you're looking to sell it, you can always allow the market to tell you.
