I picked up this interesting chair at an estate sale that I stopped at on my way into work. The last thing I need is more chairs, but something about this one begged me to pick it up, or maybe I was just in withdrawal.
In any case, I feel reasonably confident that this chair is Danish. It has a solid teak base, and what looks like Kvadrat Hallingdal 420 upholstery. The dust cover was ripped in a location and I can see there is either Pirreli or Rotex webbing, then a jute weave cloth, and then a quilted fabric as a seat support. latex foam seat cushion that is completely deteriorating, and the cushion has a brass zipper at the rear to change out the foam. It certainly is not top of the line construction, but it does seem to be a notch above the typical volume production.
Does anyone recognize it at first glance? It kind of said Ditzl to me, but I do not think that is right. I still need to d\really dig in and search for answers, but I thought I would throw it up on the board and see if anyone recognized it. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Wow, I am really having some difficulty finding this chair. I found an example of a cream colored one and a black leather one being sold, but nit additional information. Just not sure what search terms to use other than upholstered, danish, Scandinavian, teak base, club chair, lounge chair, pod chair....
@Zephyr @mark737. That's a reasonable suggestion. Plenty of people on Instagram would agree. 😏
Now to find some adverts/catalogues to confirm.
Found a listing with an LK Hjelle label.
Also came across a blog where they contacted a member of the Hjelle family who confirmed that Gerhard Berg designed chairs and sofas as part of the successful "Norse" product line; it consisted of low and high back chairs, some with wooden arm inserts. These chairs etc ,were particularily popular in the USA.
Looking at images online some of these other designs have the same base and contrast wood details

@lexi Found this photo on the Hjelle website with the label "Square Norse GerhardBerg" . Sure looks like the same chair to me.
And I assume you saw this Mats Linder write-up on Berg:

@mark737. An image of the same sofa from the LK Hjelle # on Instagram; with a nice bit of provenance history.
Purchased in 1967 with LK Hjelle label and confirmed by the company as being the " Norse" sofa by Gerhard Berg.
BTW: I had checked Mats Linder's site when @zephyr first posted and did not see this model. Also went to my other "go to" site for all things Norwegian; not there either. So put it to the back of my mind with a "will check it out later" tag and promptly forgot about it!! 🙄
So good call on the ID.

Nice work! That sure looks like the correct chair. The Hallingdal is what threw me off, or maybe it is not Hallingdal at all, but it is the exact same. The two button backrest definitely matches the chair I have, as well as the base construction. Obviously the overall shape matches up as well.
I went through the entire DFI looking for something that was similar, as well as numerous hours searching google. All because I was fixated on it being Danish. I had started to search for Scandinavian the last time I was looking. In any case, you guys rock! I will start going down the LK Hjelle -" Norse" sofa by Gerhard Berg, rabbit hole now.
Thanks again!!!
No problem. I know everyone hates on 1stDibs but that is how I ID'd your chair. The best thing about their site is how you can put in many search parameters, such as period, country or region, materials, keywords, etc. I searched under "lounge chairs", "mid 20th century" period, origin of "Scandinavia", and a keyword of "teak", which returned 612 results. So just had to look through six pages of 120 chairs to find this one on page 5.
