I'm trying to identify a recent purchase. Does any one have any info on these chairs? No markings. Dark wood with linear grain. Reupholstered about 10 years ago which seems obvious. One picture with upholstered back removed. The side chairs have what looks like a pocket style screw under seat holding back section of chair. This detail is not present on the arm chairs. Detail photo of "arm spline" included. Interesting reveal detail at seams. Any thoughts of age, manufacturer or designer would be super appreciated. This is my first posting. Thanks Tom

THose are fascinating chairs. The wood of the wedged through tenon to the armrest is teak, both the armrest and the through tenon. The wood of the pockethole seat rail appears to be Afrormosia, but the photo is not so good for wood identification.

Thanks for the take on the wood Leif. I had never come across Afrormosia. The arms have more wear and as a result seem lighter. I'm adding a photo of a section of the wood that shows some sap wood and some other photos. In general the wood is a deeper color than teak but not as figured as walnut. When I first saw photos of the chairs I thought they might even be rosewood. In person I was able to discount that. Too bad but still nice chairs, strong, well built, quality work and comfortable. Any help with this identification is welcomed. Thanks again!

Hi

The armchair is by Poul Volther for Frem. The armrests design is his signature. There is probably some afromosia there and it should be marked.

I don't know about the side chair but I don't believe it is from the same designer / maker.

Please have them reupholstered! 🙂

Nice job, Doc! And yes, that is Afrormosia. They are mostly Afrormosia, with a little teak.

Excellent work guys. Leif for getting the ball rolling and DrPoulet for the icing on the cake. I sensed they were fairly early when I bought them so it was cool to see the 1961 date on the Design Museum Danmark listing. Thanks again to all.

Actually, the dining chair is by Poul Volther for Frem too. Model #141. I found a vintage ad in one of my Mobilia.

It is also on the furniture index.

To follow up as stated each chair has the burned in stamping Frem Rojle Made in Denmark with a paper Furnituremakers Danish Control label. Covered by the last reupholstering job. Thanks DrPoulet for the additional identification.
