Hello, I'm new in this forum and I need some help please. This small chest - height about 50 cm - was found on the attic of our deceased grandma, I was able to restore it in good condition and now I am curious what it could be.

Many thanks for any help

Hi, it's a beautiful one and very very rare, produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik and designed by Børge Mogensen.

Don't sell it, keep it and enjoy it, it's a real bijou.

@jens-mann @mvc.

I have also seen this table attributed ,by various sellers,to Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard- Nielsen.

Being me I could not let this discrepancy go unchecked and did some searching.

Posting a link from Mats Linder's site; A Søborg Møbelfabrik catalogue from 1964.

If you scroll down you will see this nightstand, Model 322. Just to confuse matters, it makes two appearances, one with beds by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard- Nielsen  and the other with Borge Mogensen beds !

So I checked the DFI and no sign of this night stand, but if you look at the model numbering system in the catalogue and cross check with the Furniture Index, it becomes apparent that the furniture with numbers beginning with 3 relate to Hvidt/ Molgaard- Nielsen designs.

Up for discussion. Thoughts?

Hi @lexi, thanks for the interesting investigation, it's indeed a little confusing.

We got this model only once, about 15 years ago, and I remember well that I thought "oh it must be a Hvidt design", because of the dovetails as design element(which are actually no dovetails 😀), but when a good friend from Denmark came visiting us and mentioned en passant "oh you have a nice Mogensen" and me: "no it's a Hvidt" and he: "no it's a Mogensen" and me: "are you sure?" and he: "yes".

Fact is, all what I know about danish design, I learned it from him in those days, I could always rely on him as an absolute expert and never had any doubts about his judgment (dangerous, I know!). so we sold it as Mogensen, and by now nobody took us to court. 😀

Unfortunately, I can't discuss this with him no more.

@lexi @mvc @jens-mann That's really a good one, lexi. If you look at the catalog closely, there can be no doubt that the bedstand was designed by Hvidt/Molgaard. As you ponted out, the model number starts with a 3 just like all the other Hvidt/Molgaard designs in there. All the Mogensen designs start with a 1. Kai Lyngfeldt Larsen designs start with a 5. So this was there way of making clear who designed what.

The bedsite table seems to have been in the Soborg product range only for a very short time - as was the rest of the Hvidt/Molgaard designs. In a 1958 catalog none of it appears. In a 1966 catalog none of it appears either. The 1966 does only have Mogensens designs in it - and the only bedside table in there has a model number beginning with a 1 and looks completely different.

"People buy a chair, and they don't really care who designed it." (Arne Jacobsen)

@herringbone. I went through old threads on DA. It seems @leif-ericson has a 1962 catalogue. Also I found one of the nightstands with a John Stuart Inc. label and @spanky mentioned a few years back that she had one of their catalogues ( no date mentioned) with some Hvidt / Molgaard designs. Maybe these might help narrow down the production period ?

It would seem this piece was also retailed by Poul Dinesen; found one with his stamp.

As deputy chairman of the committee of inquiry I hereby declare: it appears to be a Hvidt/Molgaard with 99,47 percent certainty.

Thanks, @lexi

@herringbone @mvc. I contacted Mats Linder and it turns out he has a Søborg catalogue from 1962. He kindly sent me 3 images confirming Hvidt/ Molgaard as designers of this bedside table. Just crossing the T's and dotting the I's.

Hi @lexi

I am just a little stupid German girl, so please be so kind as to explain, what does this mean: "Just crossing the T's and dotting the I's."
