I've seen these often attributed to Verner Panton, does anyone know how to verify their authenticity? They are definitely old and show signs of wear.

Not Panton---the red dye and the wooden hanging ring are the clues here.

There are tons of capiz shell light fixtures from the Philippines and other places, both vintage and new. Some are pretty nice, others are kinda junky.

One subtle but clear distinction that it might be a Panton lamp is that the Capiz shells are held by metal rings not with a fishing line which is typical of the for tourist version. As mentioned, Capiz shells (also mother of pearl) are native to a region in the Philippines.
