The Bertoia Foundation has some great information on identifying genuine Bertoia chairs. Here's the link:

They mention that when production shifted to Italy in 1986 a number of changes were made, including the addition of the paperclip-like pieces to connect the top to the base. If you look closely at the picture showing six different versions of the chair, it does appear that some of them have "clamps" like the one in your picture. And the photo caption mentions "wide clip connectors".
Hi there,
I have come across some wire side chairs and all the features seem to be correct as shown on the Bertoia Foundation website. I am a little stuck with the 'paperclip' connector which seems to have a metal clip over the top to secure it to the base frame.
Anyone seen this before? Is it likely to be genuine?
