Hi colleagues
Recently my client consigned this chair. With my experiences of this chair, all have been branded with Niels Vodder and Finn Juhl at lower part of wood frame. It looks very similar to NV53 chair but I am not sure whether it is authentic without being branded. Do you know any case 53 chair without mark?
thanks for your answer in advance.
@vint-gallery please post a picture.

@vint-gallery It has been discussed here that not all Niels Vodder pieces were marked, especially those for the American market. But I‘m not sure how many 53 chairs really went to the US. I guess not many. Where is this chair from? US? Asia? Could it be Kitani? They produced it for more than a decade but mainly (only?) sold it in Asia. They should also be able to tell if it’s one of theirs. House of Finn Juhl do mark their products very consistently and they only have been producing the 53 for three years, so that can be ruled out. Maybe @cdsilva has more to say.

I don't know the FJ-53 very well. It is not one of my favorite FJ designs. The poor re-upholstering effort, and lack of detailed frame photos, makes it more difficult to confirm whether this is legit production. The bad knockoffs, often sold at Kamelot Auctions in Philly, are easy to tell, and the OP's chair is not one of those.
Also, I thought that brass tubing was the primary spacer material that Niels Vodder used for the FJ-53. The tubing on the OP's chair looks to be black metal. Perhaps legit production shifted at some point from brass to black metal? If it was a Chieftain Chair, I'd be able to provide a better answer 🙂
I'm not sure if I find the armrests very convincing. What's the wood species? Is it teak? Cant tell for sure, but the grain looks a bit odd. And there's another thing. The front of the armrests, where you are supposed to put your hands, should be very delicately shaped. Look at the picture from an early Niels Vodder production. Maybe you can inspect the chair you have with this picture and other pictures you find.

Here's a newer reproduction from House of Finn Juhl. Finn Juhl is all about elegance and the perfect line. That's the feeling you should get from a licensed and masterfully crafted original, no matter who produced it.
