HI Fellow Addicts,
I just bought this chair which I haven't been able to find anywhere, even though it looks very familiar, the armrests especially. The overall form reminds me of Arne Vodder but the arms are similar to others attributed to FJ. IT may also be an American made amalgamation of designs... Any ideas?

Redo the back cushion with foam that is 1" less thick and make it the same height as the back of the chair frame or at least not more than 1" taller, as measured from the top surface of the seat cushion. Ditch that granny fabric and redo in a solid wool in an interesting color. This will improve the look of the chair by 100%. If you want to go all out, strip all the finish off the wood and ebonize the chair frame with permanent India ink. Then you'll be up to 150% improvement.
Just my two cents!
Trystcraft, speaking of Finn Juhl style chairs, perhaps you could answer a few questions for me?
This past summer, a knockoff rosewood Finn Juhl 45 chair was listed and sold in a Treadway Toomey Auction. Toomey had done some background research and figured out that the Chicago Air India office had commissioned 2-3 of these chairs as they could not afford the Niels Vodder made licensed version. This info was clearly stated in the listing, which sold for $500. I saw this chair in person, and it was a decent knockoff which may not be so readily apparent to those unfamiliar with the design.

This chair was soon listed on eBay afterwards under a seller account of
c, "Thanks" just floored me!
It's great to know that somebody is paying attention. Excuse me if I don't hold my breath waiting for a response.
Seriously, though, anyone paying that price for that chair on eBay got exactly what they deserved. There's one born every minute. It's how we elect Presidents now.
Merry Christmas!
Excellent catch, cdsilva!
Next up: is the Papa Bear chair he has listed legit? He says the webbing, which looks like it might be car seatbelt strapping and which is stapled in place, is original. He also claims the fabric is original but there are visible staples along the outside arms (though a few tacks are seen too). I don't know enough about these chairs to comment on much else.
spanky, while I think the Papa Bear is legit (with the possible exception of arm staples added recently?), you bring up a very good point.
In an industry where trust and integrity are key parts of your brand, why on earth would someone so easily toss that away for short term gain (I guess you could make this question #5)? Without the Air India 45 context, I don
The seat webbing is correct. I seriously have to wonder what causes someone to half strip a Papa Bear though? There is a fiber filling that has gone missing from the back, the welt, and the very large rear fabric. The chair is very hard to get right with all the original pattern pieces. This poor chair will probably never look right.
It is a goo illustration of how the backrest of original condition chairs no longer look original. There are many springs that compress the springs contourin the backrest. They have all worn through letting the springs go to their full extension. This backrest looks puffed out like a ballon. Nearly every upholsterer gets this wrong. Probably because they think that it should look like it looked when it was stripped. And it is tricky to figure out where a few dozen broken springs should go and how long each should be.
