I thought this was a Poul Volther piece, but now I am not so sure. Although the handles and base are very similar, the joinery on the case is much different (mitered corners rather than butt). It's signed in pencil on the top right corner of the back "MP" and on the opposite corner "7A".
It's a really well-made little chest, and i'd love to know more about it. Any ideas??

Appears to me to be a legit Poul Volther piece for FDB Mobler. Not sure if the similar pieces were a different model or details changed over the years. Here's the listing for the 6 drawer version in the Danish furniture index which shows the same pulls and corners as yours:

Here's an old listing that matches your piece, except they seem to have inadvertently included a Mogens Kold mark from a chair:

By the way, the interlocking joint can be seen on the back side photo you posted. The miter on the front is just for the veneer. Also, do the old staples and staple holes on the back go all around the piece? I wonder if there was a paper or cloth back covering to it at one time.
Thank you taking the time to weigh in, and for the links... I also noticed that the legs aren't correct, but the fact that the corners are the same does make me lean more towards PV. I'd still like some more definitive proof though. Do you think that the "MP" signature is just the guy in the shop who made it?
There is a similar design that often has a "Munch Slagelse" stamp on the back. However, those pieces all seem to have raised lips on the sides and concave edges on the front of the pulls.
Perhaps the stretchers were added in later production for increased stability? I have marked Arne Vodder Bovirke chairs that have stretchers, which are not shown in the furniture index photo.
Also, I haven't yet found a photo online that shows one of these pieces with an FDB mark. I thought they were fairly good about marking their pieces.
