We shouldn't
be surprised to see that damage; the split "tab" at the rear of the arm is inherently weak because it is composed of short grain. While the break might appear at first glance to be mysteriously occurring right through a long-grain piece of wood, what we're actually looking at is the end grain of the arm. It wouldn't take much abuse (or even seasonal contraction against the long grain of the back it's attached to) to achieve this result . . .
Nice-looking chair, nevertheless; merely a technical design flaw.
