Hi Folks,
I'm doing some research on an interesting midcentury board I picked up (photos included). It has an interesting split handle design and original black lacquered doors.
There are no makers marks, I've been doing a lot of research on it as to its origin. There are some Japanese quality control stamps to the underside of one of the drawers but so far these seem only to point to the manufacturers / quality control of the plywood.
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Best wishes,
Joe

Hi,
Your sideboard has a very Charlotte Perriand feel to it. Similar legs, similar drawers and doors. The middle handles I have not seen before.
Perriand was in Japan in the 40s and has a following there. Possibly made by a manufacturer in Japan inspired by Perriand...(just guessing).
There are two big galleries in Japan dealing with a lot of Prouve, Perriand etc. Might be worth asking them if they know the piece.
Worth checking on google if Perriand designed anything similar...
I really do like your piece.
Thanks for that KIY
The handles have me stumped too, I've never seen anything like them before, they're really beautiful. I've since learned that the Japanese stamps are Japanese plywood industry quality control marks for the export market. So perhaps the sideboard wasn't actually made in Japan. I know that Charlotte Perriand did advise the Japanese government on raising industry standards in design so I agree with you that there could be a link. Thanks for the info on the galleries, I'll look them up.
I appreciate your help.
