Hey guys, I have the chance of purchasing a Saarinen tulip table base and would like to know if it is an authentic one. Facts: It's very heavy (iron probably) It has four holes on the top of the base to fix the top section of the table The asking price is 750 USD, is this a fair price?
.
Did you see it in person or is that the sellers bad pic? It looks like it would need a new powder coat so that is an added expense. The price is on the high end for the condition. It looks like it has some bad scuffs and an unsightly chip at the base.
Will it be your primary dinning table? It is an oval so keep in mind that those on the oval 'ends' will get a bit of bounce. An accomplished chef providing tender cuts and all should be fine.
The Thanksgiving turkey will need to be carved on the sideboard but that is common. As a desk one tends to gravitate to the center narrow areas. As i did recently in an office setting. Even with a laptop and cup of coffee, the bounce was a bit odd.
It looks correct as far as being original. But without an original top i think the price is high. Consider that cost as well. I imagine a replacement marble top is as much or more than the base.
No chance
There is absolutely no chance it's authentic and it's not worth anywhere near what the seller is asking. With a little patience I am sure you can find a knock off base / table for about what you paid for the marble, which is gorgeous BTW. However, don't even think of spending $750 on a fake tulip base. I wouldn't even spend $750 on an authentic base, unless of course, that piece of marble happens to be from Knoll. Why bother seeking a genuine tulip base, if the marble isn't from Knoll as well? You still wouldn't have an Eero Saarinen for Knoll tulip table. As for identifying Knoll bases, take a little time to do some research on Google and you'll quickly learn the difference, as these are one of the easier MCM pieces to be able to identify as the genuine article.
