Hi all,I'm wondering if anyone can recollect seeing a Hans Wegner four-seater sofa with four feet (the back two splay back) and an upholstered back (vs. slats)? Everything I've seen has 3 sets of feet, with stretchers and open slats on the back. There's one that I want to buy and it's attributed to Wegner but not marked. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful -- I just worry structurlly, that with only four legs and four seats, with nothing supporting in the centre, that it may not be sound. Would appreciate any feedback. tks!
The structural integrity depends a lot on where the legs are located. Many modernist sofas have legs that are moved inward, creating a cantilevering effect that shortens the unsupported part of the frame, and makes a four seat sofa structurally as strong as a typical three seat sofa that has the legs mounted all the way at the ends.
thanks so much for the feedback. i see what you mean and that makes total sense. now on to my second (or first question) - does the form I described sound like anything you've seen attributed to Hans Wegner? In as much as it's similar to the one you've shown - by Getama, it's also very different. the fact that the back slats aren't exposed and no stretchers (again, like the one you've shown). Would love any input. thanks!
