Hi,
I'm new here. Last night I found a great looking but dilapidated chair on the street. I knew it looked familiar, and when I looked it up, saw it was likely a copy of the DCW. No label, no marking. The dimensions are about 1/2-3/4" smaller than those stated all over the web for the authentic DCW. However, it's a really nice chair, but needs much work.
The one thing I'm really curious about is the shock mounts. I've come across many posts mentioning the relatively hard to find "lozenge" shaped or oval shock mount on the back rest. Oddly, though I think this is a copy, it does have the oval mount. Do copies have that?
Aside from that, can anyone provide info on how to restors and refinish this type of chair? One shock mount was clearly a handmade job- it's falling apart and made of some kind of foam. The one on the back rest spine is intact and attached, but unfortunately the back rest needs to be reattached to the mount. 🙁
I'd also like to refinish the wood, but this looks like several layers of wood, and I don't want to mess it up. Can I use sandpaper?
Advice appreciated!
Thanks!
Boy -- there
sure are a bunch of clunky "replica's" out there . . .

More pics. And please don't...
More pics. And please don't lambast me for sanding the seat!!
I used 220 grit and a hand sander. I did not sand for long yet the color is clearly gone. Would that no indicate a stain? I literally took off only the shiny part. With the shine went the color.
Note the tons of funky glue in the screw holes on underside of seat. Not in good shape.
-edit-
I have no idea why the pics don't post in their entirety. Is there a reason some get cut off in center?
I've tried to post link to album below, not sure if it'll work. http://s1293.photobucket.com/albums/b584/usillyrabbitu/

What a lucky chair to have you rescuing it, and giving it such attention! And to my buzzed eyeballs, it looks to be an early Herman Miller version DCW...but others on this site are far more educated than myself on those matters. Obviously it's been (poorly) repaired before. Be gentle on it. Be gentle on me. Be gentle. Carry on.
Best,
Mark
