Can someone please clarify if this particular Deskey andiron design was reproduced by different companies, and how to distinguish the originals from a knock-offs? I have seen them with different combinations of brass and iron, and with different brass/black finish combinations.
I received a set today from an ebay seller and unfortunately they are not a matched set. One andiron is completely cast iron with a brass finish on all 3 pieces, while the other's large upper semi-circle piece is solid brass, and the other 2 pieces are iron with a brass finish. Also, the upper semi-circular pieces slightly vary in form, width, and thickness. The set I received have the short supports on the back, rather than the long Bennett signed log holders.
In short, what is supposed to be brass, and what is supposed to be cast iron on the originals? Were they originally produced with varying black/brass finish combinations? Were they reproduced by other companies?
I'd like to find out so that I may address this seller with proper information. They were listed as original Donald Deskey Brass and Iron Andirons.
My pic is from the listing and I'll add some better ones later. Many thanks for any help.
Most of these pics show what I mean by the form or shape of the large "C" shaped piece. In the first pic, the front andiron is the one with the brass "C". The last pic shows the difference in width. The narrower one is cast iron.
Any information about the production of this design, as well as materials used on the 3 separate pieces would be helpful.
Thanks!
If anything, can any of you share with me if you see this as something that affects the value of the andirons. Thanks!
