Or am I just crazy? I'm looking at the first chair in the picture, something about it is calling out to me but I don't know why....it's certainly not the horrid upholstery! Am I deluded? Or is it more than meets the eye?

define "special"
they're not intrinsically particularly special as far as I can see but could maybe be made special or be part of something special through creative application, if you have some sort of a vision or something
"you can't shine shit" is wrong; shit can be shined... whether it's "worth it" or not is up to the individual
sometimes I like to shine shit just for fun and sometimes shit can be made special with a simple change of context

The two other ones seem more refined to me (the darker frames)? The light wood frame looks rather clunky and designed for community spaces..

If any of these chairs appeals to you or you are just looking for a project to test your refurbishing skills, why not go ahead and check it out in person so you can assess the condition, worthiness, usefulness or possible pedigree (if any). These chairs seem common/generic in form but could be a stunning piece if done right in the context of what you have or what you are trying to achieve.
If you like someting and sincere about it, it should work.
