| bj, those are nice chairs | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | Richard Tanimura | General discussion | |
| BTW bj, those are nice chairs/sofa. The visible cane breakage seems to be on the back and since the back does not bear as much strain as the seats, why not give Spanky's technique a try. Just patch the thing. One thing to consider. I find that fresh cane tends to be lighter than old cane but this could just be my supplier. But since I find it is really easy to spot patching others have done, it might generally be the case. Check with the other's. This may just give you a small taste for caning and who knows, it might just push onto the slippery slope into the masochistic pleasures of caning. Bwaahaaahaaa. | |||||

| That's why I said "These assu... That's why I said "These assumptions I am making are the product of reading several sources. To me, it would be foolish to take one source's word for it. I will not claim it as fact, but as in religion you have to find your own truth by reading the lines and between them." I don't expect anyone here to share my exact beliefs that I have come to through the process of reading. Many can read the same book and get different stories from it. The same reason there are denominations in the Christian faith .... Everyone shake hands. Whether or not Bertoia had something to do with the wire chair, or Harper the clocks doesn't change the one thing we can all agree on. They were all amazing designers and truly gifted. They all contributed to this thing we love called design. | |||||

| Pinky Pinky I agree, not the best color at all. The idea of ,,The color of the year,, is... pathetic. And putting that flower behind the color... (!!!!) They couldn't find other thing?. But now, dear Olive and Jesgord: I,d respectfully disagree in one thing: If one pink to choose, no doubt the first would be the bubblegum-pink. And be sure to ask that way to have no mistake. I was reading about Sergio De Loop, a local under-artist, he combines the bubblegum-pink with the parrot-green, I?d add the ducky-yellow. If not absolutely-white. 😉 ,,A todo o nada,, choice. | |||||
| I couldn't pass it up | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dashes | General discussion | |
| I couldn't pass it up and it's a good thing, because it's in incredibly good condition, nearly mint in fact. I need to learn how to sell some of my things, because this is getting ridiculous (space wise). I can't even imagine how to sell such a thing on ebay -- or rather, I know how to sell it, but have no clue how to go about shipping it. Do you sell from your site, or ebay, or a storefront, or all, ? Are there really that many customers ready to spend $500-1k on a Plycraft chair? I really would like to keep this chair, but if I could turn it into a grand, I'd rather do that. But how? I'm pretty sure it's a Plycraft, although the tag/label has been removed. Any advice/info really appreciated. | |||||
| A kid v. no-kid showdown! | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| A kid v. no-kid showdown! There's no winning this fight. Shall we talk about abortion next? Peg, good advice. You just do what you have to do and not worry. For me, the big thing was lamps. How many times did I have to fix the lamps and say "no" about the lamps to a child too young to understand? Not many. So now we have hanging paper lamps. They look OK, and when I'm more confident, I'll get something nicer. As a funny aside, one of the paper lanterns is ripped. It's a very clean tear. My husband confessed that he hit the lamp with his Christmas present, a remote controlled helicopter. At least they are only $6. I've been on both sides of the kids camp, having had my kids a little later. One thing I can definitively say is, EVERY KID IS DIFFERENT!!! With my kids, it's like raising different species. It's crazy. | |||||

| This might be the right time... This might be the right time to reinsert my comment that was deleted today............. Vive la differance. Thats the great thing about the fact we all enjoy design,it does something different for all of us,what makes me happy might make someone else feel differently. I guess for me my reason for being more Pop based in terms of preference comes from the fact I came from a house full of antiques. My dad is an avid collector of all things Georgian, the only colours were mahogany, walnut,Giltwood and rosewood, then I discovered wildly colourful furniture and I fell in love. To each their own I say. The moist important thing is to respect the fact that what you dislike will be liked by someone else. | |||||
| Help with an ID? Double "e"? Double "f"? | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | Devibhagwati | General discussion | |
| Good evening! I'm new around here. I recently discovered a passion for mid century modern furniture. But only for cheap ;). I look for things I enjoy in my price range and then bake stuff for my husband's friends so they will help him move it up 4 flights of stairs. Good thing I'm a good baker. I saw this awesome set of teak furniture. It is out of my price range right now but it is gorgeous in excellent condition. I'm ever curious so I got a photo of the makers mark but I can't find a thing about it in on google. I'm pretty nifty with google but nothing. Any help would be appreciated. | |||||
| Yeah hard to find anything on Milicron end date... | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | Eameshead | General discussion | |
| Yeah hard to find anything on Milicron end date... Is there a reason you are you aiming for a Milicron chair in particular? For instance, maybe you live near the old plant and its a home town nostalgia kind of thing? Or do you have some other shells or bases that are "correct" with that time frame? One other thing I might mention about Milicron armshells is that sometimes (not always) there is a "waffle" pattern on the outside (reverse) of the shell that I have never seen on any other shells. (Perhaps this only appears on the early or late Milicron shells, and at some point we may be able to use it to refine dates further) I will keep looking for an end date clue. Seems like they possibly went right up through the late 80s, but that is just a guess. | |||||
| I suspect the staples were | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | General discussion | |
| I suspect the staples were added by the former owner. It is already a very strange thing to suppose that the factory did it, and to add that they did not do every drawer seems far too unlikely. The drawers sides on that Morganton piece are also sycamore, which is a nice correlation. The handles are close to the same, although I believe yours has more screws. Could any of the screws have been added by this same former owner? The thing that makes me MOST question morganton is that the drawer slides are done in the scandinavian style on yours, and the American style on the morganton piece. | |||||
| Bertoia Diamond chair | 1 Relevance | 6 years ago | Mcoudert | Identification | |
| Hello, I bought a bertoia chair to a guy who swear it was a real one but I have doubts... the thing is the guy had a lot of design furniture in his place so either is really good and they were all fake or so it happen that the only thing fake he had was this chair and that the reason he was trying to sell it... I believe it is a fake because the chair is weirdly low... the seating is at 36cm high... which seems low to me !? does anyone know if Bertoia produce different height of chair whithin the different fabrication? I have to specify that it is the most common type of Bertoia Diamond and not the one with the shockmount. For the rest, the welding on the base or the wire seems legit and others dimension fit... only the height is weird to me? Thanks for the help | |||||
| Yes | 1 Relevance | 22 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| Yes I think I was trying to describe a possible long-term trend in human development, and its current manifestation, without either defending or criticizing it. That is, if it is happening, have I described it correctly, regardless of whether we think it is a good thing or a bad thing. Some of the negative aspects of the "splitting" of man from his natural habitat, reconnecting with it through artificial or second-hand means, are noteworthy. We've all certainly been witness to some remarkably aggressive on-line behavior, which I agree seems to be enabled by the anonymity of this medium. Other manifestations of increasing anti-social behavior, in the "real world," occur both on the sidewalks and on the streets of America (at least): many have remarked on an alarming increase of "Me First-ism" among pedestrians and drivers both. | I love these ads | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LRF | General discussion | |
| I was at Herman Miller today and i picked up a hand out they gave me to the trade and in it, it included some wonderful ads they used Decades ago 1952 one is " Americas Most famous modern chair" can now be yours for only $25.00 that is the DCM DCW LCM LCW this ad ran in House beautiful, Brides magazine, Better homes and gardens. another ran from Finger Furniture in Houston from 1948 for the the Nelson slatted Bench table for $48.00 But my favorite was from Herman Miller BEWARE of IMITATIONS enjoy the comfort of the Real Thing. and that was in 1963, so even back then the company was aware other manufactures were trying to rip them off, one thing for sure it was not the Chinese, as they were to busy studying in their little red Mao books and could not be bothered. | |||||

| yes thanks for remembering ... yes thanks for remembering me We appreciate all business, We have chairs coming from The East coast and the West coast, Sometimes, all right all the time , i wonder why people from NYC and LA ship us so many large chairs, Womb chair,Egg chair, as i guess they can not find anyone in their area that recovers modern furniture, It can be very difficult to do, some of these pieces, as they were all constructed with foam, that was sprayed on and the hardest thing is to remove all that miel. So the smart thing to do is like Barry says always see if there is a great upholstry shop in your home town first for your larger chairs, and contact us if you can not find one. | |||||
| I think I have more chairs than friends. | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| I think I have more chairs than friends. Too funny, some people around me simply do not understand my fascination for classic Mid-century furniture. I hear oh I remember that chair, back in the day it's old huh. I love design, of all sorts down to my VW Beetle Convertible. I had an Element and one my bro's friends said, "Your sister likes weird stuff." Pfffwhatever, I like to say I'm misunderstood some people have no sense. I understand when you guys say I can stare at a ???? for hours; I walk into my home doing the same thing. From my home to the furniture, even what I drive I have a thing for design it's who I am and I will NOT apologize for it! Smiles. | |||||
