| Martha's photos of the black chair reveal enough detail to determine that the chair is not the work of Herman Miller or Vitra. Three details: the top of the spine is rounded over; the portion of the spine that's attached to the back is too short; the other bends in the spine are too "soft." The photos were taken too close to the chair, which distorts perspective, so it's a bit difficult to judge shapes of seat and back, but these may differ as well. The allen-head fasteners are the final tip-off that this is not an original. Thanks for the look . . . ! | |||||

| ... to differ with your assessment. Aside from the base, how is the piece below any less refined than the sculpture onegroovydude just acquired? The fact that Bertoia did not sign his work, and some of the forms he created have been copied makes documentation and provenance all the more important if one is paying a significant sum for one, or trying to sell a Bertoia sculpture. It may well be a genuine Bertoia, it may have the same artistic value, but without documentation or authentication, it will not have the same monetary value if Mr. groovydude decided to ... | |||||

| flat color Hi there: Actually the colors are quite vivid, although they are mixed, and not super saturated. The paint application is thick, I was exploring surface texture, and using only palette knife to apply the paint. I don't know if you based your comments on the image from the post, or went to my site. I sure hope the image on my site appears higher contrast to you. On my monitor, it looks accurate, but we all know how images can differ from one monitor to another. | |||||

Anyone know anything else about the 51 or perhaps some other chairs that are similar from Vodder? If nothing else, its a good mystery to solve, and the chairs are nice looking (and comfortable!). -JesseS | |||||

| I beg to differ. It entirely depends upon the bricks. If you have an historic home in Brugges or Charleston or Philadelphia, leave your bricks alone. If you have non-historic, non-handcast bricks as above, go ahead and paint them. The bricks in the above dwelling look commercial and nondescript. I would paint them to freshen them up. | |||||

| ... original design, some care about licensing, some just know what they like. I REALLY prefer the thin top and the current HM proportions (60" x 28" top with a narrow pedestal, which is different from BOTH the original D-10 and D-20), but tastes differ, naturally. All that aside, though, the desks I saw at the sale really were horribly built, and the pedestal depth on the one I measured was only 16" -- WAY too small -- so the legs were just completely misplaced. It looked AWFUL. However... I'm very happy with my older Modernica pieces, as I said before, and ... | |||||

| interesting... i had always read that HM had discontinued them due to a lack of demand. The VOC's would make sense though - considering I have a Cigar and Saucer and they still smell after several years (not strong, but I can smell them)! Thanks for the info. My question is how do the Flo's Castiglioni ones differ from the Bubble Lamps? I know they are more webby looking, but I was under the impression they used the same process, same material. | |||||

| Do you have any pictures?... Do you have any pictures? The finish will differ dependant on the age of the stool. The earlier ones (30s and 40s) were finished in a shellac polish or lacquer, later ones in a variety fairly heavy coatings which don't allow for much patina to form anyway. The rim of the seat should have a veneer covering - you think this has been removed or could it be one of the adaptations Artek Pascoe made for the US market? Pics please! The Second Cycle thing to my cynical mind just sounds like a wheeze dreamt up to inflate the price of old ... | |||||

| ... Standard chair. For the natural oak finish it is even harder to find good matches outside of the Prouvé catalogue, I think. So I am with SDR on this one. The Wegner is a fantastic chair, but it and the EM Table differ a bit too much in materials, finish, character and overall design philosophy for my liking. On a more general level, I find it challenging to mix Prouvé with organic MCM. His style is rather unique, which is why I love it. That is not to say it can't be done. And if you are happy with the mix, then that is all that matters. Good luck! | |||||

| SPANKY: I too find it strange that Ikea received an award for the Poang design, as there's very little difference between it and Aaalto Alvar original designs. I have a Poang (red wood frame), and I've kept it, because I also find it the most comfortable chair I've sat in. I thought about replacing it with perhaps something less common, and more ambitious, design-wise. But for everything I considered, it would have been a compromise on comfort, and I felt I should have at least one comfortable chair! There's another Poang-like chair Ikea used to make; same f ... | |||||

| ... of us here are intrested in design as theory and history rather than as business. It's not to say that money doesn't have it's place in design, but it is a little tiring for an individual to constantly be 'on' as a salesman. Many of us here currently, or have worked in sales environments - but sometimes you just need to take a break from it. There is also the "know-it-all" attitude that you project (intentional or not). The conversations on this forum range around the world and across several generations. Your experience is valid - but you're (admittedl ... | |||||
