| Nice Braun-style DAB radio | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Andrew J Edinburgh | General discussion | |
| Nice Braun-style DAB radio I really like this digital (DAB) radio that currently resides in my kitchen. It's about four years old, the sound is good, and it's got that dieter Rams thing going on (it was designed by Ideo). The only problem is that the manufacturer (Acoustic Solutions) seems to have gone out of business, so if you want to get one, you may have to scour eBay. http://www.ideo.com/work/item/dab-radios | |||||

| Clock confusion Thanks for the alternate view. Can anyone help clarify? MoMA offers that little black number as a dietrich Lubs design, whereas the fitzsu site, as we have seen above, shows a seemingly similar model as an out-of- production, recently-discovered-in-old-warehouse find, by dieter Rams. Two subtly different products? Alternate universes? | |||||

| No longer made? Braun Travel Alarm Clock by dieter Rams Item Num : AB1 Braun travel alarm clock, thought to be extinct, has resurfaced from a lost warehouse. The AB1 Braun Clock is a simple pure modern design. This would be my choice as well... It is available, but limited supply. http://www.fitzsu.com/braun-travel-alarm-clock-dieter-rams-p-6624.html | |||||

| ... subjective thing. That it's a firm kind of sofa is a bonus, rather than a vice in my book (I hate those mushy sofas where you sink deep into the cushions, I'd rather have some support when I am sitting). Actually, I did not know the company LK Hjelle you mentioned (have been looking them up and they seem to have other sofa models that look great too, so it's quite a good discovery). They are still a bit of a dark horse, are they not ? I think they are probably better known in Scandinavia than in Europe. Unfortunately, according to their website they do n ... | |||||

This young woman took a bunch of really homely down the road graphics Acura designers have been trying to find a way to integrate and she did in one drawing what all their other designers in house and out of house could not do...and she did it in a cross over SUV. This woman might well redefine auto styling as mu ...

| Koen Aren't the negatives you sum up also the points that give his furniture charme, and ultimately, his succes? I do recognise the overall improvement on quality, regarding the designers you mention, but don't you find them final? When you would place the ahrend chairs next to the prouvé one, I would choose the latter, as it creates a larger dynamic in the relation between the furniture and myself. I am not denying the beauty and esthetic quality of Kramers designs, but I feel not challenged by them. Question is of course if furniture has to challenge the user.. Dieter Rams designs are intended to blend in to the maximum, creating as little resistance as possible. And I am a huge admirer of Rams and the things he delivered, so this is a tricky one. | |||||

| There have been many... There have been many beautifully designed electronics over the years that also work well. dieter Rams and Reinhold Weiss designs for Braun, Brionvega designs by Bellini, Castiglioni Zanusso, and Sapper, Olivetti Typewriters and calculators by Bellini and Sottssas......Bang and Olufsen Stereos, etc. Even today's Braun inspired Apple designs are lovely. It seems to me, though, that phones have been overlooked. Whatever happened to the good old days of Grilo and Ericofons? | |||||

| Congratulations! A true classic and a good example of typical Rams spirit. He's a pioneer in minimalist product design and basically invented the "apple-look" when Steve Jobs was still in kindergarten... Oh, and BTM is right: Be careful, especially if You're located in the US and don't trust adapters. We run on 230 Volts here in Germany! Wallpaper put together a (quite small) portfolio when he was a guest editor this summer: http://www.wallpaper.com/interiors/guest-editor-dieter-rams/1716 | |||||

| Chewbacca... Regarding dieter, austere functionalism is close to how I used to refer to Rams. Mine moniker was minimalist functionalism. But as I began to study Renzo Piano's engineered functionalism, and minimalism, and then think about formalism vs. functionalism, it leaped out at me. dieter is largely a geometric formalist concealing engineered function in much the same way that a car stylist conceals a chassis with body. Once I got this, then it was a matter of looking at the forms and asking are dieter's forms closer to the internationalist, or the brut ... | |||||

Today, »designer« is more likely to bring to mind Ralph Lauren or Giorgio Armani, that is, a fashion designer. While fashion designers usually start as couturiers, they -or at least their names- are often ...

The intention may be a mere box, but the unintentional communication says otherwise. In terms of design and politics... Compare designs from post WW2 eastern Europe and Allied countries (lets include Japan due to post war change), there are clear differences. Allied countries, were brimming with optimism and a sense of direction. This I think is reflected in the modern but decorative approaches in design...it's democratic ...

| Perhaps you should have... Perhaps you should have bought a double cheeseburger or gone to BK and bought a whopper instead? Honestly though, in terms of ease of use, intuitiveness and operating system, I think Macs beat PCs. I know this is a subject of much debate and personal taste. That said, however, I think most here would agree taht, aesthetically, the Apple products, as a whole, blow away the competition. Any company that has borrowed so heavily from dieter Rams and Reinhold Weiss designs is okay in my book! | |||||
