| Ernest, are you related to dieter? Edssal17, you do need to sit on it to make that final decision. Comfort varies from one person to another and how you are going to use the chair for. Here at work/office, the chair(s) works great for receiving/entertaining guest but not for lounging/relaxing or other very specific uses you may have. | |||||

| I've been off the grid a few days... In the mountains. And a raw diet from my garden free of chemicals and fed by a altitude natural spring. Not that you need to clear your diet of any toxins. I think something is excessive in your diet that you love or frequent. The two of you are obsessed about something together. Funny that this came up. That happened to me only once in high school years ago. The orange thing. I was a jock and my diet was mostly yogurt and protein. sugar and salt. For two weeks i was orange. It went away but i've always wondered. Back the ... | |||||
| Wall-E and Fat people | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Wall-E and Fat people Interestingly enough the new Pixar movie Wall-E has a beautiful, if unsubtle, portrayal of future generations of Earthicans. It is funny that the discussion centers around what the designer should do, rather than what the end user should do. This in itself seems like an ingrained American trait - if something isnt working shift responsibility to the next guy. If I'm too fat to use a chair, design me a bigger chair. Not: I should diet and exercise more... If the designer is responding simply to demand, sure - its the designers problem ... | |||||
| Why is not owning a TV pretentious? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Why is not owning a TV pretentious? I aspire not to own a TV...I'd love to be set free of the addiction. Now-a-days my diet is at least mostly healthy. Mostly just the discovery Channel, History Channel and the Food Network. (Used to watch HGTV, but it bores me to tears now) And Target ain't all bad. I have gotten some very decent things there. As for Vitra miniatures...personally the collection of anything that is without function is hard for me to contemplate. I try to give what I consider unless waste-producing junk at least some worthiness in thinking th ... | |||||

| Common Sense and Poetry Love the poem Big TV man. it's marverlous. And Gustavo....very very very good points in your post above. COMMON SENSE That's what 99% of this is all about. However it's really difficult these days to ask people to use it. To stop reflect for a few seconds and make a considered choice on whether they really need the item in their hands, if they could turn off that light or get their water from the tap and use a reusable container. We are so hand-fed on convenience in our current society. Short sound bites in the news, everything prepa ... | |||||

| ... if the matter of self-interest is ignored, the question remains "what do sex and faith have to do with artistic talent" is still there. To me, those are about the last things one would associate with aesthetic function, right down there with wardrobe or diet. I suppose, if one found no influence from heredity, education, environment or the intangible and unknowable that we call "genius," then one would start to look under a rock for something, anything, to explain the tendency for design and skill -- but that hasn't happened yet, has it ? The last time th ... | |||||

| ... or a generic digital electronic high tech applicance. Ever since the dieter Rams days, at least, design has IMHO adopted an electronic high tech form language that visually labels an appliance electric (and now digital), rather than visually labelling it the kind of appliance that it is (i.e., its function). At the time this HB mixette was made, HB made electric knives in a similar light modern form language at similar level of abstraction, but they used different forms for the knife than hey did for the mixer. They did not have to make everything look like ... | |||||

| ... soon be able, to alter the rates at which our bodies age. However, complexity rears its hoary head very quickly in most genetic interventions in higher order organisms. For instance, you interfere with certain kinds of medicine and diet and make people's bodies live longer than there minds. The law of unintended consequences is triggered. Next, you modify genes to make brain cells replace themselves faster than they die off later in life and you get longer brain life that leads to brains getting to big for their brain cases. Unintended consequences. I'm spe ... | |||||

| ... or another, from consuming as large a share of the world's raw materials at it has in the past. further, i'm guessing that this "lean design" paradigm (i coined it here first) is going to spread across china and india also, because just as we are affording less, they are affording more, but they have sooooooo many billions to bring on line that lots will have to make do with the least possible, too. hence, policy makers, propagandists, economists, and entrepreneurs are going to be propelled by this context toward instituting, officially, or unofficially, th ... | |||||

| who was the best? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | HPau | General discussion | |
| One of those silly questions like 'who's your favourite writer' ? But a bit of fun anyway. I nominate dieter Rams for his consistency, clarity, quality and relative affordability, even the Vitsoe stuff isn't outrageously expensive and is amazingly flexible and adaptable and all the Braun work goes without saying. | |||||
