| It occurred to me the other day as I was being admonished on the Ball Clock Help thread, that what gets me into trouble with the vintage-loving faction is that I am into design, not designs. By that I mean I couldn't give a rat's patootie if my chair has a name, was included in the Modern Collection at MOMA, or is the prototype of a rare widget. What matters to me is that a thing is well-designed and well-made and serves it's purpose simply, elegantly and without excess frou-frou ornamentation. It also matter to me that the item is ecologically responsible, which does give vintage a leg up. But I'm definitely lacking the 'collector gene', I never buy anything for the fame of the design. Folks spending beau-coup bucks on a thing for the collectibility or rarity of it are a mystery to me. I actually do own chairs with names and I do own vintage things. But I bought them because I like the design, the quality and the way the thing serves its purpose. But I also have sturdy cheap drinking glasses (another thing that got me into trouble), lots of stuff from IKEA (which regularly gets me into trouble)and restaurant supply. I also *gasp* own repros (the subject that gets me into trouble the most) for which I adamantly defend the legality of. I've been lurking about on this site for about 7 years. Never, until the other day, did it occur to me that I might not actually be a Design Addict. So have I missed the boat somehow? Do others feel the same? | |||||

| I did it in photobucket.... I did it in photobucket. Once your pic appears in the first place when it uploads, there is reduction options directly under it. I had to upload a second copy because the one in my stockpile had a reduction option, but it didnt work. It seems like reduction only works if it is the first thing I do after I upload an image to photobucket. I suppose I could also do it ahead of time in photoshop (which I did), but it wasn't enough of a reduction. It also helped that I did it first thing, while I was still groggy, or I am sure I would have given up quickly. Being out of it can be an asset! | |||||

| For me, the point of the... For me, the point of the parable is that appreciating simplicity and function can be a stage of intellectual and philosophical maturity. A very poor person's only chair may be a spare wooden thing that he owns because he can't afford anything more. As he gets a little money and education, maybe even nouveau riche, he wants his surroundings to reflect his better life--a statement to himself and his neighbors that he's made it. Think Babbit. Think massive Cadillacs and SUVs. If, however, our Babbit grows intellectually and philosophically, he'll come to understand that the unnecessary complexity and ornamentation can be detrimental aesthetically and existentially. So he gives up a gilded status chair for a wooden thing, maybe a simple DCM. He rides his bike to work, he buys locally, etc., not because he has to anymore but because he chooses to. He's gone back to the banana leaf, not because it's the only thing around, but because it functions so well, it's beautiful in its simplicity, and attaining it doesn't require him to sacrifice his life and his values. | |||||

| Wow...thanks But I have a questions...since the wooden disk thing is already attached to the base, do I need to do all of this? I measured, and it seems to be pretty well-centered so couldn't I just attached the table top to it with wooden screws and voila...the table top should be centered too? Is there a still reason for me to detach the wooden disk thing from the base? And you mention wooden screws. I've contacted Knoll, but do you have an idea in what size screws I would need? Thanks So it looks like the table is authentic Knoll. I have a base marked Knoll International. I have the wooden disk thing attached to the base for the table top to go onto, and I have a white laminate table top to attach once I get appropriate screws. Wow! What a bargain for $600. | |||||

| well Mr. Johnson is dead. So no! James - I know what you mean about the timelessness of the CSH. I had a conversation last night about the same thing with a friend of mine. It seems modern houses today all seem to be replicas of each other. Almost none that I have seen seem to have that timeless appeal. They all tend to want to be a Dwell house. I am not saying that is bad, they just don't have the personality of many midcentury houses. The main thing is that many of of the midcentury houses by the likes of Neutra, Koenig, Ellwood, Edward Durrell Stone, have a certain lightness and grace to them. You're right. Although seemingly simple, it's a very hard target to hit! | |||||

| well I am not the "victim" so this would be left up to the unfortunate purchaser.....however they would likely never even know they have been duped. Guess I just wanted to point out yet another Ebayer with unethical behavior. Funny thing is that this seller did this not too long ago with another lamp with similar bulb housing that they purchased on Etsy. On Etsy it was all plated brass and popped up on Ebay in these same "original enamel paint" colors and sold as Arredoluce or something of that nature. Crazy thing is that someone actually purchased it and if I remember correctly it was in excess of 2k | |||||

| I like the International one... I like the International one best too. Only because it's more interesting to see homes in other cultures. But all in all it's all the same across the globe. The main thing I see them pick homes for on the International one is the view ... because often it's vacation homes by the water. I get that. You can't change the view. The other thing is the furniture, because in some of the island locales its hard ($$$) to change that out. | |||||

| . jeez DC, such a cynic! I like most earthed roofed and underground buildings, don't you think theres a great deal of comfort to be felt? I like the way they force the architect to think about light more too, instead of this glaring whiteness and brightness we see so often. A gesture can be a powerful thing! I like the huge courtyard house below, most people would say that you'd be cheating yourself of the view but I think the right thing was done (there is still a view), why scar a coastline with a building no matter how good? And from experience I know that having a great view quickly fades, you stop appreciating it. . | |||||

| Well, being that I am a... Well, being that I am a design addict the looks are very important. That is one reason I have to part with my wonderful Advents. But the other thing is, I am a bass player. One of my concerns is the bass response. Don't get me wrong .... I don't need to bump and grind rap style. I just need Sir Paul McCartney's bass lines to shine through with great tone. Kevin - Put aside for one moment the fact that you don't like Bose as a company. How do you, as an audiophilem like the Wave's sound? Olive please don't think I don't trust your judgement on this, I just want to collect opinions. That being said, I took a look at NAD. Nice looking stuff. I like the features of this one (but still haven't looked at the other suggested companies, and still havent ruled out Bose). The unfortunate thing is, I would like to hear the stuff first. I ight just have to rely on my addict friends and go with my gut. As much as a music freak I am, I don't know squat about audio gear. BTW - When I googled NAD the first thing that came up was "National Association for the Deaf." I thought you were playing a prank. http://www.nadelectronics.com/dvd_players/L53_framset.htm | |||||

| I understand The cool thing The great thing about this couch, although not prized, refers to the fact that it is not reproduced and is therefore something different. All of the knoll remakes are beginning to be quite tiresome and it seems as one member pointed out that all iconic pieces are now in production so virtually the market is becoming oversatuated with iconic pieces. I am going to have this reupholstered and webbing or suspension added. I will keep this until my Kagan couch comes along, oh and it will. I am in the dead center of Mid Century throw away alley. Thank you for the input and Feliz Navidad | |||||

| I think the answer is... I think the answer is 'Yes' I think you may be able to tell several things. The obvious thing would be their interests. Do they have alot of CDs or records lying around? Is there a Bible on their coffee table? What are the titles of the books on their shelves? Another thing that you can tell is their style. Do the furnishings have any kind of relationship to each other at all? Do they appear to have a 'style.' or are teh inhabitants simply uninterested in design. Are they hand-me-downs? Are they eclectic or are they passionate about a particular period or designer? You might be able to tell alot about their family, Are there toys around? How many chairs are at the table? | |||||
| It's very easy to compare | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| It's very easy to compare if you go to a site that sells the genuine thing and find the photos taken from the same angle as yours. DWR has at least one photo that makes it very easy and a very obvious difference is in the base, as the two people above pointed out. I first noticed the difference in the stainless steel collar on the post---yours is much taller than on the real thing. Then the difference in height of the base jumped out. http://www.dwr.com/product/eames-lounge-ottoman-vicenza.do?sortby=ourPicks | |||||
