| RE: Does anyone know the Designer behind those danish teak chairs? | 1 Relevance | 1 year ago | Herringbone | Identification | |
| ... is a similar “family” of chairs; I’ve included a photo of one below. Who designed these chairs is unknown—at least, there are no definitive attributions. According to the Danish Furniture Index, there’s one source that attributes two of the chairs from Korup’s lineup to Henry Kjærnulf. If Kjærnulf really was the designer—and that’s not unlikely, since Korup was located not far from where he lived—it’s possible he designed the entire collection. In smaller furniture factories like Korup, it was common to either have in-house designers or to hire an external ... | |||||
| Oxford Highback and Egg Restoration | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Catzman | General discussion | |
| Two quick questions. I have an Oxford highjack with arms rest that I bough in 1984 in London and has been re-uphostered in San diego where I live part of the year. It now needs to be re-uphostered - and for good reason. The chair has been in constant use in my library where I write. My egg chair and stool too are now threadbare. Will likely need re-foaming and new upholstery. I have researched this site and others and therefore I am aware of Hume's work in Los Angeles, and DK's service in PA. My questions are: 1. Does Fritz Hansen undertake restoration of ... | |||||
| Wall unit...I was not aware that it was a CSS unit the CSS vs Cado Debate | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Lenox | General discussion | |
| With age comes knowledge. I have come along way from the early kitsch of collecting, yet, I am unable to identify this wall unit. We have three bays but only could put up two. Any ideas? History: These wonderful folks in San diego blessed me with this. They mentioned that at one time it cost a few thousand dollars. The monetary statement is issued to help with identifying the unit, in that, valuations could lead to the market in which it came from. Be at peace | |||||

I find them amazingly spacious inside. I find them amazingly comfy. Persons who complain about the ride being too pillowy and having too much lean have bought into the advertising hype. We've all, Americans, Europeans, and Japanese, been sold a bunch of sizzle about the importance of sports car handling. Designing a car for the street with sports car handling is about as stupid as designing a drip ... | |||||

| I have been giving my own personal review of all the modern magazines and i know i have been somewhat critical and I do appreciate when others do agree with me I read a letter from Jeff Coons of San diego tht mirrored exactly what I said about the May issue being one of the worst they put out . I don't want to slam Dwell cause of all the modern mags i think they try the hardest to be ahead of the curve but I think what more can you say about prefab homes that have not been said a ... | |||||

| ... creating space, rather than creating surfaces, as we discussed in a thread about the architect who did the San diego Convention Center and the Fresno Gov. office building (can't recall his name right now). Why has contemporary modern become so oriented to surfaces and shapes, and less interested in space? Are contemporary designers aware of how heavy their work looks in relation to midcentury modernists' designs? What is good about heavy? It seems to run counter to the green trend that we need to consume less and more wisely. Is heaviness an unconscious exp ... | |||||

| "Umbrellas" | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion | |
| "Umbrellas" In October of 1991, I drove up to Berkeley from San diego to visit my sister. I wasn't sleeping much in those days, and I hadn't slept at all the night before the drive. Plus my car was stiff and loud, and it had taken over four hours to get through Orange County and LA... So I was pretty numb when I first saw the umbrellas, and it took a good four or five seconds to realize that they were actually real. http://www.christojeanneclaude.net/um.shtml | |||||

| ... when modern archritecture was reaching its crescendo climax. The Goshen demolition feels a bit like someone proposing to tear down the UC San diego main library building or the Boston City Hall. It's funny, 10 years ago I was repelled by brutalist buildings and gravitated toward structures with a beaux arts neoclassical style. Now I'm awestruck and nostalgic for the intimidating sense of power conveyed by brutalist structures. These shifting tastes seem to highlight how fluid individual and social moods are. What's vogue today is passe tomorrow. The ... | |||||

The only thing that comes to mind is a movie called Prisoner of New York where Bernadette Peters crawls through one of the openings! Anyway, they finally sold it to me and said it was a custom commission by Sol Bloom for a Fur Salon in NYC. It is now at my home in San diego. Anyway, I was always into automotive and industrial design, but I got interested in furniture 20 years ago thanks to my artist first wife, who had a highly-developed modernist aesthetic and an Aluminum Group lounge chair that just fascinated me. My taste is simple: I like steel, aluminum, and stone. Bright primary colors, black, white. I barely tolerate wood, and then only if it doesn't look like wood, or if it looks machine-made.
