| RE: Fritz Hansen Lily / Seagull / 3208? Rare? | 1 Relevance | 7 years ago | DrPoulet | Identification | |
| Hi. Lucky you! these chairs were designed in 1968 for the National Bank of Denmark. Later put into mass production in 1970. Arne Jacobsen died in 1971 so this is one of his last work. The model with armrest is 3208, the one without is 3108. The names you saw are nicknames so I would not really bother about them. Yes, they are rare. They were produced only for 4 years, 1970-74. FH relaunched them in 2009. The fact you have one from 1977 is super odd. | |||||

| My maternal side has been traced back to Thomas McGauley (ca. 1790-1851) died in Dunleer, possibly born in Drogheda. We were very close to the many McGauleys still in Massachusetts when I was younger. All smart, driven, deeply principled people and none ever met a stranger. Very little is known about the Keaney (Kearney?) side, however. There's a bit of French-Canadian mixed in there which helps to explain my dad's and my coloration (though I used to find a sprinkling of red ones in my beard before it turned mostly white). My mother confided to me that when ... | |||||

| ... projects to particular employees, Nelson retained control over the final design, and selected and edited his employees' work as well. Given his final editorial control and the ultimate "approval or disapproval" role played by Nelson for every product of that office, it does not seem fair to attribute the final design to the employee only. Under such circumstances, it just seems inaccurate to say that "Ernest Farmer designed the slatted bench" or "Irving Harper designed the ball clock." In my view, the most one can say is that X Object was designed by "Geo ... | |||||

When Mies died he willed his payments from Knoll to the MoMa. It's a subtle distinction, but Knoll still owns the right to use the Mies name with the chair. Instead of sending their check to Mies they send it to MoMa. MoMa doesn't really own anythign, they just collect the check. The copyright is still owned by Knoll, and with that they have certain executive rights to determine how they ...

| extremely sad occassion.... extremely sad occassion. every profession should have practicioners who take their craft as seriously as Johnson did, and yet be able see the humor in life and joke about the very craft they love. honestly, can you imagine a more reserved architect (like say, richard meier) refering to getting an erection when jumping to one of his buildings, as johnson did about the folly in his new canaan estate? its simply unimaginable. a year and a half ago i contacted his office. they were kind enough to have him sign a copy of what was then ... | |||||

| Brørup had two shops, Nyt Hjem and Bovirke. Both sold furniture that Juhl and others designed for Brørup exclusively. When Brørup died, sales manager Poul Lund took over Bovirke (and the Juhl production) and made it the big export company we still know today. But neither he nor Juhl ever licensed production to Slagelse. Slagelse had their own exclusive range, at the beginning designed by the Christensen brothers, later on by many known architects. | |||||

| According to some articles I've read (like the one linked below), The UK changed their laws in 2016 to match other EU countries , making it illegal to make, import, or sell replica furniture. And copyrights on furniture extend 70 years from the death of the designer in EU countries. So, for Mr Buch, that would be until at least 2043, assuming he died in 1973, which is not confirmed. Unless I'm misreading these reports. https://www.dezeen.com/2016/08/04/10-popular-furniture-replicas-outlawed-uk-copyright-eames-hans-wegner-arne-jacobsen/ | |||||

I thought this Place was about design and exchanging knowledge (even if it meant getting hurt sometimes.)Design I like Language, Language is like design. As long as no one is swearing what is the big idea? Trying to take back the streets? Have you had jury and been slammed in presentation? Remember about defending yourself and your design. | cont As for the moral aspects of it: I am going to take a slightly lateral view of this and ask: what is actually in the original designer's interest: (a) that (long after he has died and the patent has expired) one or two companies are allowed to profit from his design while others are 'allowed' only to make copies which are inferior in some way; or (b) that his actual design is respected, cherished, and widely known (in its most accurate form) so that his name continues to be associated with finely-made furniture ? Let me give an example from art: Van Gogh ...

| @leif-ericson You’re right but it’s difficult. I‘ve spoken to both families a lot and many designs from the Bovenkamp era are unbeknownst to all of them. Which is odd. Also there are some open questions about early models and model numbers. And later, in the 70s, Ib Madsen hired external designers and they drew pretty curious (or ugly) furniture which he unsuccessfully sold under the MS brand. Arnold, Ib and Henry have long been dead. The last surviving journeyman from the old times died two years ago. Thus a complete, comprehensive and flawless guide is a ... | |||||
