| Books I think the future may well be with eReaders or iPads, rather than actual books. I've just had to clear the house of an elderly aunt who has recently died and it was stuffed with old books, of no particular financial value, that she had collected over her lifetime - also old (and now unidentifiable) photos. This is now sadly just junk that is going to get moved around from jumble sale to charity shop. When the iPad has been perfected, a few years from now, I can see the advantages of having a lot of this detritus of our lives in digital form. American ... | |||||
| the question of stores buying vintage pieces | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | Robert Leach | General discussion | |
| the question of stores buying vintage pieces from the children of those who have just died and then marking them up to sell to the public? People die all the time and those left behind sell the stuff they don't want, mid-century and otherwise, it's the life blood (no pun intended) of the Antique trade. Of course things are marked up... people have a living to make, rent and bills to pay... what's the problem ? | |||||

| I grew up in Short Hills,... I grew up in Short Hills, and my mother was an excellent needlepoint sewer. She bought the yarn and canvases from a woman in Short Hills who painted the designs to be sewn. In fact, the woman would go through art books to find paintings that served as her inspiration. My mother did a needlepoint that is very similar to what you photographed, so I guess that this is the answer to your question. My mother died many years ago, so I can't supply any more information. | |||||

| Whitespike, I think I'd... Whitespike, I think I'd enjoy to share a beer with you. Plain talking and clear thinking. The 'Ark' - don't call us, we'll call you. And FINALLY for the record let me re-state that the designs are in the public domain. They passed into open use 25 years after the design was recorded. Switzerland has an anomaly in that designs SOLD IN THE DOMESTIC MARKET are protected for 70 years after the death of the designer. 670 design recorded in 1956. Charles Eames died in 1978. RIP. You do the math, Buddha. | |||||

| Grunge was real...but it was... Grunge was real...but it was in part a rehash of previous efforts. Think mid to late 60's-70's rock and punk. Maybe even a dribble of early 80's post punk. Early 90's...good stuff. But died around 95 96. It left faster than it came. Grunge fashion remains to this day. 90's design...I've drawn a complete blank. Hudson, the use of decades makes for a good summary. 10 year cycles as opposed 4-5 year cycles gives plenty of time for movements to come up and fade. | |||||

I don't believe any guns were involved in the 1914 Taliesin massacre; rather, those killed were attacked with an ax, at the only exit which had not been blocked. The residence was then set on fire. The perpetrator was found nearby; he had ingested acid, and died in custody. A very sad tale. Mamah and two of her children were among the victims; Wright was at work in Chicago. | |||||

| About 15 years ago when I was an art student, some of the other students were doing quite a bit of plaster casting of faces, etc., and a professor did issue a warning about the potential for third degree burns. I believe he said someone had died doing a full body cast. I think that there can be variability in terms of how much heat is generated depending on the composition of the plaster. Other catalytic reactions, like mixing 2-part epoxies, also can generate significant heat. | |||||

| Yeah... My Kid Could Paint That was a good one, but I haven't seen The Pollock one. I'm sure you noticed this, but Helvetica was done by the same guy that did Objectified. Another one I would like to see is "Died Young, Stayed Pretty", about the Indie Rock Poster scene. It looks interesting as well. | |||||

| ... and in a good year $26.000 for many years. I do not think that you will easily find an experienced designer that would not confirm that royalty payments always and largely exceed the hourly rates for that same project. Of course I do not include products that do not find their market, but you do not need a designer to develop those? I think the interesting part of this discussion is not the legislation as such but what the legislation achieves and what is was intended to achieve. For good reasons the copyright law protects a work that is covered by it to 50 ... | |||||

| I felt I got a pretty good deal on this... Its an old oil by some guy named da Vinci. Five dollars. I had it checked out and it turns out it is the original. It was stolen from the Louvre in WWII by some Nazis who smuggled it to Montevideo. Around 1970, the guy died and it was picked up at an estate sale and found its way into Argentina. The Argentine that bought it decided to escape the crazy Peronistas and moved to San diego, CA. No one believed him in San diego that it was the real thing, so he hung it in his metal fabrication shop for 35 years, as a kind ... | |||||

| p5 In order to illustrate the necessity to reduce heteronomy I am using a contribution from a linguist, a specialist in comparative literature Edward Said, who died last year. He characterizes in an exemplary manner the essence of humanism, of a humanist attitude. As a philologue he limits the humanist attitude to the domain of language and history: »Humanism is the exertion of one's faculties in language in order to understand, reinterpret, and grapple with the products of language in history, other languages and other histories.« . But we can extend this i ... | |||||
