| Farewell Don Ervin | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Modern Love | General discussion | |
| Don Ervin recently died in a car accident. You may not know the name, but you sure will know this poster he created as director of graphic design for George Nelson and Associates. As far as I know, he remained actively working til his death. He was 85 years old. See earlier thread below: http://www.designaddict.com/design_addict/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread_show_one/thread_id/7689/ | |||||
| Can Anyone Identify This Designer? | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | Bodidley | General discussion | |
| ... My mother bought 6 pieces with stands. It's very well made, walnut I think. Here's the problem. It was early in this designer's career and there are no marking anywhere. My oldest sister did finally find out who made it but the secret stays with her; she died unexpectedly last June and never told anyone, except of course my mother. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can identify it or at least suggest a person/company that could get me to the next level in identifying this furniture. Thanks again, Jeff | |||||
| Irish Mid Century - Arthur Edwards chair | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | danielmpoole | General discussion | |
| ... collection of domestic and contract furniture designed by Arthur when he was design consultant to John Hogg & Co Ltd, Navan, Republic of Ireland between 1959 and 1963. It was this particular design which was awarded the first Irish Industrial Design Award. I'm attaching a copy of the original page in the Crannac collection catalogue showing Model C, upholstered as you can see in Donegal two-tone grey handwoven tweed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosewoodandteak/6451659073/ Arthur had been invited by the Irish Export Board to examine the potential ... | |||||

| If it came down to it and I had to get out of the house fast there are only some documents and a couple of things I'd save, I'd deeply regret losing books mostly. My grandfather gave me this drawing set when I was about 13, before he died. Ivory (or bone), incredibly finely made and complete. Its not really a design oriented question but whats important to you? We all say we love the things we have but perhaps we don't love the Eames chair as much as we think. Actually doing some searching I think maybe its caseinate (?) an early plastic. | |||||
| Alarm Clocks again | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Yes, I just finished reading the original thread about alarm clocks. While much of the debate between the existence of time to US conversion to the metric system was fascinating, very few of the original links worked. So - my little crapola CVS battery powered LED alarm clock has died after nobly serving for 9 years. My requirements for a new one are: Simplicity Ease of use Ability to see the display at night Variable or non-offensive alarm sounds. I'd like to stress the last one. Nothing is worse than waking up thinking you're in a fire drill or an air ra ... | |||||
| Hans Wegner prototype | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | JD | General discussion | |
| My aunt bought a Hans Wegner chair in the 1950's directly from the man himself. It looks like a big satellite dish and is the most comfortable chair in America. Orange-brown, looks like a jack-o'lantern actually. It's been kicking around our family now for the past 25 years since she died. The chair itself is a prototype, only 6 were made. I have a picture but no web link. I can email the photo to anyone. I'd like to restore it as best I can (it's already been re-covered twice) using original materials. Does anyone have an idea where I might find these, ... | |||||
| info on finding Umanoff | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | ffonamu | General discussion | |
| Arthur Umanoff was my cousin but I don't know much about his career except what I see on the internet. I doubt that there's any biograpgy of him, he died some time ago but you can probably get info on him from his son Craig Umanoff who (I think?) is now residing in Oregon, or son Heywood, or daughter, Kim. | |||||
| Norman Bel Geddes Sofa | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | designmike | General discussion | |
| My mother recently died recently and she owned a sofa she claimed was designed by Norman Bel Geddes. She purchased it in the late 40s - early 50s. It was incredibly long and slung back slightly. I can find no evidence on the 'net that Bel Geddes ever designed sofas. If anyone can tell me he did, I'll upload an image for verification. Thanks. | |||||

| info on artist: Katzen | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | Cloudburst2000 | General discussion | |
| ... apparently a well known sculpturor who has some pieces on display at the Smithsonian. She died in 1998. I have no intention of selling the painting. I'm just curious what her art works are worth. I'd assume that her sculptures would be worth more than her paintings since that seems to be what she was most known for. Does anyone have any good sites where I could find information about the value of pieces by certain artists? I certainly don't mind searching for the information myself, but I got a load of website hits when I did a search on her name. Ar ... | |||||

| I just finished viewing a DVD on Louis Kahn and if i were a reviewer i would give it 2 thumbs way up!! . It was one of the most well done documentary's directed by his son Nathaniel Kahn the illegitmate son of the legendary architect. Nathaniel Kahn begins a fascinating journey to discover his fathers work and to come to terms with the personal choices he made. Lou Kahn died in 1974 when his son was 11 and never lived with him. Louis Kahn had on wife and 2 mistress and produced 2 additon ... | |||||

| 1953 Raoul Dufy Poster question... | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| I just found what appears a poster from 1953 show of Raoul Dufy's work at Galerie Louis Carre'. Dufy had died in March, 1953, and the exhibition was in July and September, 1953. It was a fund raiser for the protection of the Chateau of Versailles. The picture is mostly green. Its a cafe scene under some French Tricolor banners. I've always thought Dufy was underrated. The only vague connection of this poster to DA is that Dufy did the art work on a lot of fabrics and ceramics and so was influential in design in his own way. My question is this: Would a poste ... | |||||
| The butchering of Kjærholm's PK4. | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | sharplinesoldtimes | General discussion | |
| ... examples above pisses me off! ... grrrr, I would really like to have such an elephant. But this weekend I came across a example myself at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair: Poul Kjærholm's PK4, also known as the "Holscher" chair. First, some background knowledge about this chair. Kjærholm designed this chair in 1952 as a simplified version of his final project at Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole, the PK25, which proved to be too difficult and expensive to produce initially. Very few examples of the PK4 were produced, mainly to friends and family members. The metal ... | |||||
