| HB, I was not trying to be | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | cdsilva | General discussion | |
| HB, I was not trying to be cute or snarky but was responding to Earnest's original email query about Moller and PP Mobler specifically. At the same time, I was also making a point that Danish Modern did not arise around the use of teak. Oak and birch were commonly used by the cabinetmakers in the 20's and 30's, with mahogany as the premium exotic upgrade option. It wasn't until Denmark entered into a trade agreement with Thailand for importing teak at favorable pricing and Charles France developed a process for cutting teak efficiently that use of teak in D ... | |||||
| France and Son did not make | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Herringbone | General discussion | |
| France and Son did not make these exact pieces too. This table clearly resembles model 510 and model 503/504 but the first one is shorter and the second one doesn't have a shelf. Besides both tables were designed around 1955, six years after the first Wanscher chair was produced under the name France and Daverkosen. The FD logo must have been established by then. Maybe it is a copy or the Kindt-Larsens also worked for a much lesser known producer at the time. By the way: Inger Daverkosen was never involved in the production of any furniture. She was the wid ... | |||||
| The danish cabinetmaking | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Herringbone | General discussion | |
| The danish cabinetmaking tradition kind of died away in the 70s and 80s when many of the workshops closed. There were two reasons for that: The teak-wave was over, people were sick and tired of the same old orange wooden furniture that had been sold for 30 years in a row - and secondly there were new materials around. Consumers and designers were turning to plastic and metal. And the danish cabinetmakers and furniture factories were not able to meet these new needs. At first the annual guild exhibition ended in 1966, Den Permanente got financial problems in ... | |||||
| Leif is right. It's long | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | tktoo | Repair | |
| Leif is right. It's long since time to put this whole notion of "feeding" leather and wood to rest. They're DEAD, folks. They died when the organisms they were once parts of did. They're done needing food! And, not to put too fine a point on it, discerning collectors want to see any and ALL evidence of an item's history. In this case, consistent patina and patterns of wear are important indicators that the set has remained intact since new. FWIW, this set is one of the best I've ever seen here. | |||||
| I picked this up in a little | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | maxbernat | General discussion | |
| I picked this up in a little antique shop in Philly. Seemed to have some style and it had a plaque on the bottom. Turns out it was made by Harry Bertoia not long before he died as a prototype for Knoll to be used as an award . They were never made. I paid $12. | |||||

| ... worst quality teak pieces with random names thrown on them for thousands. I am almost stuck. Ill give you guys something to laugh about, I am only 26 years old. I started at 16 years old with design addiction (no pun intended) I burned hard earned paychecks buying every Eames, Saarinen, Nelson++ design. I don't have an extremely wealthy family or anything, I would just scavenge like a lunatic. Craigslist, and even my local thrift shops have changed. I am seeing 1stdibs print outs at my local Boomerangs Thrift Store in Boston, Savers and other thrift shops a ... | |||||
| Suspected H.W. Klein chair identification | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | artraou | Identification | |
| Hey, First time to this site and love it. I have a vintage black swivel office chair that I know was my grandfathers. I remember playing in it at his house when I was very young and he died when I was about 2 yrs old - about 34 years ago. I think that it's 1960's but I know less then nothing about antiques. The closest thing I have been able to find online is a H.W Klein black swivel chair but my chair seems to have extra stitching between back base of seat over arms. There is no brand mark on the base or on the seat or under the seat but I'd love to know wh ... | |||||

| Howard Miller Chronopak wood globe desk clock - Need help/info | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | caseybea | General discussion | |
| Hi everyone! So, my mom had a beautiful howard miller chronopak desk clock. The walnut one that's globe shape. It's BEAUTIFUL. It was in our house ever since I was a kid. So, my mom has passed, and I have the clock now. But the motor died, and she had it "repaired". The idiot clock shop put in a cheapo battery movement. (Guess what? To change the battery OR set the time, one has to rip the entire clock apart... yikes). I am looking for ANY info on what clock motor/movement I need to try and locate. Help! I've searched and searched... one poss ... | |||||

| need help id'ing these old danish chairs | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | modernwas | General discussion | |
| These chairs belonged to a japanese family who bought them as really nice danish chairs in the 1950's in japan. The mother always told the daughter they were worth a fortune(the family were really well off and a fortune to them wouldn't be anything cheap). Mother died and daughter hated them and wanted more traditional furniture. unfortunately they are not signed. There's a set of 6, two have taller backs and are made for the head of the table and 4 are like the one I have photos of. The bottom of the seats are solid teak built like panels. No marks or ... | |||||
| Knoll label history question | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | gene | General discussion | |
| I was wondering if anyone knows when Knoll ceased using the paper label that reads "H.G. Knoll Products Inc."? I am curious because I picked up an old Saarinen stool and it has that label, but it seems weird to me because Hans Knoll died several years before the Saarinen tulip line went into production, I believe. Edit: since asking this I have found other Saarinen tulip line pieces with the HG Knoll Products label, so it must have been in use for a bit after Hans Knoll's death. | |||||

| What did you all think of that movie and the question of stores buying vintage pieces from the children of those who have just died and then marking them up to sell to the public? I found the movie pretty depressing in a lot of ways, but not because of the MCM angle. Just not many sympathetic characters... | |||||
