| Lord Help Me | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Lord Help Me Lord help me that I'll still be producing anything by the time I'm 101! I do love Eva's ceramics - such a sensual exploration of rhythm and repetition and the contrasts between volume and concavity. If I didnt have to clutzy roommates I'd love some of her pieces. As for the coffee table...Its a little girly - even for my tastes. I dont think its a bad design, and this photo certainly is much more appealing than the head-on shots on DWR's webpage. There is a lovely playfulness about it and the fact that its a coffee table, kind of like the w ... | |||||

| . Finch, I didnt say I lived like that. Having all that money would be way too much work, and embarrassing to boot! Heck, last time someone gave me a $100 bill I carried it around for months because I didnt want to be "that guy" trying to break a hundred for a pack of gum or a cup of coffee. Barry, knowing that the Egg & Swan chairs are hand stitched, and still come in at under 10K I'd say the couch is probably assembled and stitched by hand, putting it into the league of a Ferarri or a Lamborghini: production cars that are assembled by hand. You should ... | |||||

| Simple City Boy I started this thread yesterday, then didnt have a chance to contribute. I'm just a country boy, living in the city. I grew up on a small farm; we grew our own vegetables, raised our own animals, and ate both. More important than doing things that were 'green' was doing things right. Construction of our house was done by the whole family because my father believed that we would do a better job than a contractor. As mentioned in previous posts my family has a creative/craft bent to it, with carpenters, artists, writers etc amongst the member ... | |||||
| Finch, nuance | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Finch, nuance While I don't disagree with the majority of your arguments, I would like to interject some nuance if I may. Caveat Emptor: a common argument used by many a shady salesman. I agree with it in many instances -take buying a car: I would do my homework on the various pros and cons of each make and model. However, I would inherently trust that if I went to a BMW dealership they would be selling me a REAL BMW. Not the case in Knockoff Land, where sellers do all thats in their powers to effectively bait and switch, even going so far as to use pirat ... | |||||

| there is an easy answer of course, if you are under experienced in these matters, get a few scraps of the same type of plywood and experiment with the suggestions offered here. then take it to a reputable professional to be finished in the look you like. i imagine you payed well for this piece, i would hate to see you heartbroken if it didnt turn out well. good luck | |||||
| Having worked in a gallery | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Having worked in a gallery Having worked in a gallery I've seen some of the seedier underbelly of art dealing. I wouldnt necessarily say that your gallery was engaging in bait and switch...but they certainly didnt do themselves any favors by repeatedly telling a wide range of customers the wrong price. If a client had ever come to me and said "oh...are you sure you shouldnt be charging MORE for this piece" I would have put them on hold and called the gallery owner to verify. | |||||
| I know | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| I know I know we've been through this a million times, but it still irks me when someone applies the term "honest" to a knock-off dealer. The inherent act of selling knock-offs is dishonest. It is profit from someone elses labor, someone elses intellectual property, and from the designer branding. Look at Paradigms webpage and ask yourself if you would buy ANYthing from them if they didnt carry knock-offs. By selling knock-offs Paradigm steals not only the intellectual property of the originals, but any marketing and PR/branding that the authentic manufa ... | |||||
| Well wouldn't you know it! | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Well wouldn't you know it! Sometimes life gives you eerie coincidences. After weeks of arguing about clocks... I was tossing some stuff into the recycling in my building at work when I saw this narrow edge of a cardboard box sitting in the dumpster. The box had a pretty distinctive graphic on it so I didnt hesitate to jump in. What do you think was inside? Why an Eye Clock, of course! It looks like something went wrong with the mechanism because it's torn up, and only the hour hand remains. But the body of the clock is solid and I figure a quick call t ... | |||||

| ... (duh). Reading James' subsequent post I was identifying with that as well - I just acquired an LTR, its perfect. When I moved it was a good chance to curate, altho I didnt lose nearly as much baggage as I would have liked. But every single thing I left on the sidewalk in the morning was gone when I got home from work - it was exhilirating and I was able to simplify a lot of aspects of my living. Now when I acquire something it has to be a)well made, and b)somewhat necessary for living. For example: I've realized that in my bedroom I have no clock other th ... | |||||

| clips so far i have checked the ottoman and the two back cushions, has trouble getting the seat cushion up and didnt want to force it. all are the same two round discs with a protruding peg on which to hang the cushion and two round poppers. That doesnt sound like anything i have read here! interesting that the change in seat attachment method is dated at both 1960 and 1971 within this thread , no wonder i am confused. if anyone can tell me how to upload iamges from my Apple computer to help i will gladly learn | |||||

| Interesting site Interesting site - altho, despite claims of objectivity there is some bias against the licensed version. He states twice that altho the current licensed production has the knoll stamp and Mies signature "ironically, the original 1929 didnt have this" - as if the current signature devaulues the chair. Also, he fails to point out that, while Knoll is the producer of the chair, the rights are held by MoMA in NYC - which recieves royalties from the sale of each chair. I think this is an important note, especially with the claims of Knolls prof ... | |||||

| Sport The cherner armchair was produced by Plycraft Co. of Lawrence, MA. I was trying to do some research on Plycraft a year or two ago and didnt find much information - no catalogs, no retail locations...zip. My best advice is to search out old department store catalogs and see if you can find the Cherner chair there - or write to the Cherner website and ask there. | |||||
