| That is a tub lounge chair. | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | objectworship | General discussion | |
| That is a tub lounge chair. It likely swivels. It appears to be constructed of woven rattan in a natural or honey finish. It has a white, likely cotton, upholstered tufted seat cushion which may not be original. It looks pretty contemporary, it could be a Pier 1 kind of thing, or maybe up to a mid-level fine furniture kind of thing, check for a label. | |||||
| In the development of any art | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | Identification | |
| In the development of any art form, the thing being born starts as a revolution against the excesses of the dying forms. It is a revolution that returns to the fundamentals and looks to create in a new direction. Then in the early development you see the new thing struggle to take shape, and eventually you find a point or points where it is in its prime, fully developed, and then it develops its own excesses and dies. In this thread we are discussing a form of excess. Excess can develop through an over emphasis on the outward appearance of the thing, the "look," without an appreciation for the thing itself. In this case the "look" of Danish Modern was generalized as dark woods, with joinery as a focal point, and a relative simplicity of form, single curves and organic shapes. And this was Lane's business model. Acclaim, with its false 'dovetails', was the huge commercial success. When you analyze a Lane Acclaim piece you realize it is a shadow of something else, and you can't get any depth of understanding until you turn and look at that other thing that is casting the shadow. This is why there is frequently not much to say about it. To talk about it is to talk about something else. I apologize for being intimidating. Your words are just as valuable as mine. Perhaps more valuable in fact. Good questions are worth far more than good answers. | |||||
| I would also wage that it is | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | General discussion | |
| I would also wage that it is either stained beech, faded walnut or some other thing, but not teak. If it really, truly, is teak, then that would be quite surprising and pertinent to identification, as it absolutely does not look like the sort of thing that would be made of teak. So take some sharp close-ups with decent lighting of the side grain and end grain and post them. | |||||

| Replacing base on a shell chair | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | heavymetalsculpture | General discussion | |
| I would like to replace the base on a shell chair I recently aquired. I've read there are wide mount and narrow mount bases. Can someone please tell me which I have? And is it as easy as ordering a new base, I'm thinking wooden dowel base, and just screwing it on? Thanks! | |||||
| Woody | 1 Relevance | 16 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Woody My catalog just arrived yesterday (which the mailman seems to have dragged through a puddle first) and I totally caught the Womb leg thing. I think it's the way the shadow jumps back and sort of melds into the leg. Beautiful catalog for the most part. I've found a new unobtainable thing to lust after: Serge Mouille. Won't it look fabulous next to my equally non-obtainable tan leather Ox Chair? | |||||
| Two things | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Two things first thng you should know...they glued that sh*t down. Its really tricky to get all of the foam off of the shell and get it nice and cleaned up. Second thing is that most of the upholstered shells screw directly into the seat - which means you'll have 4 shiny on the topside of the seat. You can have the whole thing reupholstered at Retro-redo - they use Maharam and can often match fabrics and vinyl. Good luck! http://www.retroredo.com | |||||
| RE: Chairs with curved back rests: A reference list. | 1 Relevance | 6 years ago | Herringbone | General discussion | |
| I didn’t even know that one. And I learned something: The compass seems to refer to the pointed arrangement of the legs. Maybe that was obvious for you, for me it’s a new discovery. Second edit: Okay, it was obvious for you. I just learned another thing. A compass in English isn’t just the thing with the needle that always points north. Yay. | |||||
| Herman Miller table ID | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | heavymetalsculpture | Identification | |
| I recently aquired this Herman Miller table. I'm unsure what to call it. It peaks in the middle and slants down evenly on both sides. It is not adjustable. Im guessing it must be some sort of library reading table or drawing table? It has two different medallion stickers - one on the base and one on the underside of the top. One label says Action Office. Does this mean it was a George Nelson design? I purchased this at auction in Grand Rapids, MI. http://d1t1u890k7d3ys.cloudfront.net/cdn/farfuture/2j1IU5vixpJtSNB8DEZhIDwIUXUDi6iATfLc6-9yHAQ/mtime:1487901676/sites/default/files/forum/hermanmillertable2_0.jp g" /> | |||||

| Well I'm happy I found it.... Well I'm happy I found it. Don't care that it's not the real thing. The price was right! A local MCM furniture guy showed me how to strip it and now I'm going to strip entire thing, stain it and have a chair that looks nice and is practical. Good for my purposes! | |||||

| thanks Robert That is so good looking, maybe it is me but for some reason I love every thing Girard did, simple elegant, colorful, what a gift to make some thing so un important as a ashtray look so good, I know in the 60s when every one smoked, how fun it would have been to hold a colorful ashtray like that. thanks for finding it, it is great, | |||||

| US I am in the US. I understand the supply and demand thing, but your typical person on the street isn't going to know what mid century modern is, let alone any of the Scandinavian sub categories. Sorry, I am new to this whole thing. I don't understand how supply and demand can factor in if our community is so small as it is... | |||||

The nice thing about here they still have gotten to the "ew..its so...retro" thing | |||||
| Conundrum | 1 Relevance | 22 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Conundrum Have you tried DWR? (dwr.com) They might be able to do it. BTW I have a maple HM version of the bench. It's the 5 footer too. If getting the thing out of the US is an issue (licensing agreements are perhaps to blame here?) Here's an option: there are DWR studios and HM dealers not too far from me in the Boston area. I could act as your agent buy the thing and then have it shipped to you. Since it'll be bought flat-packed I'd not have to do anything to it so it should arrive safely. I remember when I bought mine that it was well wrapped. It'll be no hassle for me to do this for you, we can use PayPal to transfer funds. | |||||
