| got my barcelona chair - the good news and the bad news | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | angelman | General discussion | |
| Well I received my barcelona chair from modern collections. It was a bit weird they didnt take money from my account until the chair arrived (not a bad thing). The chair arrived the day before MC sent an email with the tracking number. Well packaged the chair looks terrific. Seems to be very well made. The leather is really nice (I paid extra for the top grain aniline dyed leather). However there are some issues with the chair frame. There is a dent in the steel and one leg is slightly bent so its a bit lopsided. Also another leg seems to have been scratched ... | |||||

| Hi, I dont know of you still have them but I don't believe they are by Aalto. As this section from the Journal of Design history writes Finmar didnt only import Aalto designs - it could be that yours are later war time or post-war chairs imported and retailed through Finmar: "Finmar Ltd., a wholesale firm, was one of the major importers of Scandinavian furniture to the UK in the period 1934-65. This article looks at the operation of the company after the Second World War, from 1949 to 1952, charting the goods that were imported, consumption patterns, and the ... | |||||

| ... me of how easy it used to be to find good Modern stuff. It used to hide out so well in the clutter of the thrift shop or flea market, because its restraint didnt show there. Not until you got it home, and gave it some room to breathe did the restraint get a chance to do its thing. My syntax is weak today. | |||||

| I did ask. As I mentioned in last post they confirmed that base is made by them. They unfortunately didnt help me with any archive pictures. They said that "Eiermann was not really doing the uphostery chairs since he like how they look without cover" I know though that for some time there was produced a chair SE 69 with leather uphostery. just cannot find much material about it. And noone seem to know much about it... :/ | |||||

| I like that idea with the cushions, some copies definitely better than others. I saw a movie once that I think was filmed at IIT and the barcelona in that didnt have straps but a wide red cordoroy belt like a deck chair and unbuttoned red cord cushions, It looked cool but I'd try brown belts and grey wool or black belts with houndstooth, | |||||

He also had a Martin Borenstein sofa with builtin end tables. He insisted that all the furniture had been designed by the same 'architect' but didnt remember the name. We ended up buying the entire lot on the cheap. We immediately came home and researched the dilingham Esprit line and we couldnt find much information. We never once found any mention of the line being attributed to Milo ... | |||||

| OBSERVATIONS: -So i spent some time today undoing the papercord on the 2 worst chairs. i used a serrated bread knife and cut most of the papercord off and then started bending the L nail heads, Wht happened was that the nails did one of two things; head immendilty snapped off with little to no pressure or the nail came complety out of the hole. there were a very few nails that didnt break and stayed in their holes but it was a rareity. i am missing one danish control emblem and the other 3 came off with no effort (for safe keeping) -one chair is still pretty ... | |||||

| ... for sure. So like you say, perhaps it was just a fabrication mark caused by one of very few (maybe only two?) early presses that was so subtle that they didnt bother to change or retire the one with that mark. It might even be a way to begin to count the number of presses, or "prove" how many there were as more information (redundancies) comes to light. My sample size is only about 25 - 30 of the earlier ones, but that's already enough to get a feel for it I think. LATE ADD EDIT: After further review, I have to say that more than 50 per cent do have the f ... | |||||

| Thanks for comments. what interest me the most is logo that is not molded but just painted.I would like them more without upholstery. I didnt buy them yet.... Not sure if they are worth to take.. and as well wanted to learn more. I haven't seen one like that before. I agree that removable upholstery is more common with x/base.. | |||||

| I don't believe they are a or... I don't believe they are a original paring as the bolts used to hold the two together are hex bolts. The seat pad is just a normal cushion and not something specific to the wire side shell chair and the chair it self I don't know its authenticity. The shape looks right. Has 10 vertical wires and 25 horizontal wires and I didnt see any weld reinforce at the bend. You are right about not being smooth. Its it gets caught every few degrees of turning and has a slight wobble like a plastic bushing is worn out. | |||||

| If the tile top table was hom... If the tile top table was homemade. It would have taken someone a very long time, with decent geometry skills. didnt some stores let you choose the legs you wanted? One of them has been replaced with a different bracket As old, horny and man-gravy infested as the desk may look, the pictures don't do it justice. The top is easily 5" thick walnut butcher block. The legs appear to have some marks on them where they meet the top but I can't quite make anything out. | |||||

| Eameshead, I dont think... | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | sophia | General discussion | |
| ... won't. I am not alone in believing that the Eames are highly overrated. Look at their overall body of work, they didnt produce very much, had success with perhaps two pieces of furniture and failed at everything else they attempted. Charles was a failed architect who relied greatly on the input of others in design and Ray was a very cute but medicore painter. There were much better American modern designers out there, just dont listen to the hype. | |||||
