| Thanks to all! It's all good advice, it seems. I'm going to go with uasrem tip first (see if it is possible to find such a thing in my area), otherwise I will try a metal workshop locally (if they can produce good results, as sdr states) if not I will buff it out as Jim advises. One more thing, on the comment of it possibly being varnished: were these raak lamps varnished?? Thanks! | |||||

| Well, | 1 Relevance | 22 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| Well, it's an extremely rare thing, to see a major designer -- or anyone at all? -- make a political statement in the medium of furniture -- isn't it? I can't even remember Ron Arad doing such a thing -- and Warhol never made furniture, so far as I know. I'd say we need all the political statements we can get, these days -- when America has the rest of the world "on the run". . . SDR | |||||
| How exciting, new paper cord | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| How exciting, new paper cord weaving blood! (haha) The first thing you should do is to watch Caleb James' 6 youtube videos on how to do this seat, and the second thing you should do is read the two threads on paper cord weaving on this forum. The third thing you should do is watch the videos again. Etc. This weave has a few little tricks to it that are essential to getting a stable seat but that discussion is better off in that other thread. I think Caleb covers them but I think some detail photos are in order. I am doing a set of four of these now so will try to remember to snap some snappies along the way. PS, i redid some other Wegner oak chairs awhile back and got that strange red color coming off with the oil and steel wool. I never did figure out what it was. | |||||

| I'd have to bet... that it will never be as good. After watching Alton Brown's Good Eats for years, I have learned many a smart thing about cooking. He puts forth that one should only buy the cheap aluminum nonstick pans because the coating will never last and then you can recycle the pan. Since I use non stick pans for one thing only...eggs. I've taken his advice. | |||||

| Many thanks, design poodles. I'll let the thing hang for a week or so. Your advice has been wonderful. Fondly, Your Aunt Mark ps these day's, the only thing that makes me feel pretty is a proper pair of conservative pants ( as shown below prior to lunch today), a decent pair of shoes, and a stiff drink. | |||||

| krypton I have seen both the Krypton ball chair and Speaker egg chair and the fiberglass is really good. They are pretty much the next best thing to the real thing. I have seen some repos where the fiberglass looks so bad... i would really think about the real thing though! try mod livin for the Speaker egg chair if you don't want to spend the $ on the real ball chair. http://www.modlivin.com | |||||

| I've seen these around for years. The sort of thing they sold at groovy gift shops in the 1970's, along with black-light posters and Newton's Cradle desk toys. However, I have the vague recollection that this thing first existed in a metal (chrome) version, and it wasn't a mass-produced novelty but a bona fide sculpture/ work of art(?). | |||||
| Hard to | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| Hard to believe it -- but EVERYBODY's right on this one (if there is such a thing as "right" on this or any topic -- I'm becoming very Zen in my dotage) ! I do like the idea of thoughtful, even "meaningful" redesign-by-upholsterer, as Skip's example. . .exemplifies. And I certainly would have only a thoroughly qualified man or woman on the job. It seems so obvious to many that the first thing you do is throw out the "old" leather, then replace it with brand new -- in the same color and finish! So -- either salvage and lovingly re-use -- or have some fun. Once the original has been disturbed, much less discarded, you'll never recapture the past -- and upholstery can be re-redone, too. . . | |||||

| I agree with you. The space ... | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| I agree with you. The space ... I agree with you. The space is this weird thing that just happened.... I never planned on doing retail. Its especially hard in Mpls. I think that even if we had a space in a great spot, sales might the same. I prefer to deal in designer pieces & original art. Unfortunately, its a very niche market, especially for MN so most sales go out of state... the average person that wonders in equates vintage with "thrift store". Someone was in the other day and was like "I don't care about designer, I just want something practical" anyhow, its hard to know when to invest in doing a retail thing. My paintings are selling more and I could make an income of that.. I think its a possibility we might phase out the whole retail thing sometime soon in the future.. that might be the biggest reason for not moving. If and when we do move, thats big commitment and we're not sure we want to do that.. | |||||
| It looks just a little bit | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| It looks just a little bit clunky around the edges. And the screwed corner blocks under the seat--and the plywood seat itself--don't seem very Wegnerian to me, though I have never seen the underside of a PP501 so I am just guessing. However, look at the outer edge of the arm compared to the real thing. Your chair's arm edge is thicker and more rounded. Yes, the photos are not taken from exactly the same distance but the angle of the camera to subject is nearly identical. The tinted clear finish also bothers me. This is something that was used on cheaper wood to give it the look of more expensive teak or walnut. I've seen a lot of it on knockoff furniture. You could probably find other photos of the real thing taken from the same angles as your photos, or you could take new photos to match existing photos of the real thing, just to compare. That's what I would do if it were my chair, but then I love doing stuff like that. | |||||
