| . Have you been able to identify the original finish? If its oiled you can wash the whole thing down with sugar soap, rinse (it will look horrible at this stage but dont worry) and reapply teak oil. It will come up a treat. You mention in your other thread that its Danish - are you sure? Is it marked? Seems a bit rough & ready (the nails especially) to be a commercially produced thing? | |||||

| . Definitely bigger and agree with Lucifer, all or most of the furniture should sit on the rug, perhaps not cabinetry but definitely chairs or a sofa. Mine is a silky Persian thing which though the bloody thing won't stay straight is nice on the feet which is what its really for, My furniture sits within a couple of inches of the edges. Look at this, *sigh* , isn't that better? | |||||

| Use masking tape if you spray | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | objectworship | General discussion | |
| Use masking tape if you spray paint it. You won't be able to exactly match the black or the sheen of the thing, but it doesn't really matter if it's damaged. Worst case scenario you just spray paint the whole thing, no big deal. | |||||

| Well, it would HAVE to be 'of its time' wouldn't it? It was designed at that time so it is of that time. I'd love to hear why tansu chests aren't the same thing. To me, they seem to be exactly the same thing. Openness, use of glass or other materials 'of its time' doesn't change the function. | |||||

| Trying to ID a 60s coffee table in the style of F. Knoll and G. frydman | 1 Relevance | 8 years ago | moos | Identification | |
| Hi there, I recently aquired a coffee table that reminds me of Florence Knoll and George's Frydman. 150 x 53 cm, height is 52 cm. Seems to be dated at 15 - 4 - 61, and item number 13005 Dating with day before month seems to exclude a production in an English speaking country. The table was found in Germany. I am aware that Walter Wirz designed very similar tables but the marking seems to be different than the Wilhelm Renz I've runned into. Any hint would be much appreciated. | |||||

| I suspect that those three columns are structural, so, without the weird fence thing, you'd be left with three stalky columns. The solution's to make it a good-looking fence thing. | |||||

| It's got the chunky look of the 1970s and onward. Solid teak, which again is something that became more common later on. Also the Phillips head screws say it is later. One thing you might look for is a maker who used the same joint profile between the staves. I can't quite tell in your photo but it looks to be just a straight vertical line. But this is the sort of thing that would carry across to any staved piece the maker made. | |||||

| Life with a knock off | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Life with a knock off okay.. first thing I've been noticing...well.. aside from the glares of my roommates for bringing a white vinyl chair into the house, is the size. Holy cow this thing is remarkably bigger than the actual lounge chair! At 5'9'" my head only comes 2/3's of the way up the headrest. Second thing I noticed is that this chair always looks like its 'sitting up straight' whereas the originals have a nice tilt back. This one does tilt with someone sitting in it. I may try to rig it so that it leans more permanently. Does anyone have suggestions about re-upholstering? Has anyone had this done? I've found RetroRedo, and they look good..except for the one on their website re-done in metallic purple. eeek!. PS. Retroredo.com is a good resource for redoing Eames fiberglass shell upholstery. | |||||
| Knoll Night Stands | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Jsoris | Identification | |
| I recently aquired 2 knoll night stands and in trying to confirm the age and material. From what I've researched, I see that these were made in Walnut and Rosewood. I'm pretty sure these are walnut but can someone who is certain please confirm. Anyway to tell when they were made? Thanks for the help! | |||||
| I got these awhile back | 1 Relevance | 14 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| I got these awhile back but I don't think I've posted about the cat thing before. It's one of a kind, home made of wood and is two sided. I bought it at an auction on behalf of my daughter. I'd called her there to look at a couple of Brno-type chairs and she said, "eh--but what about this?" and pointed to this thing, which I had not really noticed. It looks like a gate of some sort but I can't remember if there is any indication that there were hinges on it. Googling "Kat's Whisker" doesn't bring up anything other than some place in the UK. (Note that it's one whisker. Not multiple whiskers.) It's kind of weather so may have been an outdoor thing but maybe was just stored in a barn for a long time, we don't know. We don't know anything about it. Any ideas? The other is my giant crewel piece which I think I've shown here before but it's in a new spot where I can finally get a full on photo (sorry for the graininess--dim lighting). It was designed by Erica Wilson, wife of Vladimir Kagan. She did a lot of traditional stuff but also some things like this that look great in a warm Danish mod environment. My daughter also recently got the same thing in a slightly less huge size on Ebay. Mine was only $2 at auction! | |||||

| . Don't really have the time to dedicate to the industrial, romantic, steam punk thing but for any readers who like that sort of thing I can highly recommend China Mieville, especially The City and The City and The Scar, filled with exciting descriptions of strange decrepit environments, creatures and goings on, mostly the novels are just a lot of fun. | |||||

| Hmm. I don't know if I've... Hmm. I don't know if I've seen that exact stuff used that way but I have seen synthetic fabric stretched tight and stapled like that under upholstered seats. If it looks sound, I leave it---if not, I replace it with the closest thing I can find. If it doesn't show, I don't think it's absolutely necessary that it be the same thing. Just has to do the job. (Yeah, it does look like window screen! I had a whole roll of stuff like that and I gave it away. Now I kinda wish I still had it.) | |||||
