| Ugly | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Ugly No betty, you didn't say 'ugly' per se but you implied it with your post on medical devices. To ask if the device should also need to "LOOK good" you imply that the converse 'not looking good' is the actual state of the device. Koen and Gus, I'm with you. A well-designed item often, not always, but often, looks good. And humans are attracted but things that look good. The aspect of visual appeal is inherent in the things we seek out, homes, cars, mates, clothing, pens, televisions, you name it. Here's an odd but interesting thing to note... many extre ... | |||||
| I would like to know why it... | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Raymond Jepson | General discussion | |
| I would like to know why it... I would like to know why it is not possible that you go to school. Also, what is your background? Many designers didn't go to design school. Many went to art school, or architecture though. Those backgrounds gave them the necessary visual knowledge to succeed. Also being an excellent salesman helps if you don't have a formal education. From my google search btw, Newson did go to school. He studied jewlry and sculpture. I loved his Ford concept car, but I would like to see him tackle a more serious design challenge and see ... | |||||

| Eames repair I was trying to do a similar thing myself last year. didn't bother in the end, but this is the advice I was given by someone who had rettached shockmounts before: Removing, Repositioning and Reattaching Shockmounts is a major undertaking. Removing the shockmounts is usually quite easy. 1) Position the shell so you can pry the shockmounts from the shell. 2) Insert a screw into the shockmount (all the way in). 3) Use the pry end of a curved hammer to pry the shockmount from the shell, using one hand to hold the shell from moving. They usually come ... | |||||

| Helping Others Through Design | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | aethellen | General discussion | |
| ... do is really helpful to others or not. Clearly, I get a payoff by doing this sort of work - because for some reason I am happier engaged in a creative process rather than purely linear activities that come to resolution either too quickly or with such definition that interpretation and scope becomes unwelcome. Anyhow, I know my clients are happy and I know I have brought clarity to their vision through my design work, but since I wasn't curing disease or bringing hope to the impoverished, I didn't really think this qualified as a calling -- even though it h ... | |||||
| Mies never (as far as I know)... | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | HP | General discussion | |
| Mies never (as far as I know)... Mies never (as far as I know) designed anything like a barcelona sofa, he did drawings for a cross framed chaise longue based on the barcelona but it didn't look so good. He did do some sofas for the Toronto Dominion Bank tower project which looked quite conventional, get a hold of Mies van der Rohe - architecture and design in Stuttgart, Barcelona and Brno (skira) or Mies van der Rohe at work (phaidon)and you'll get a better idea. | |||||

That 'leadership' in belgian design has been taken over by Modular (check them out!!!) and they already have some classics like thet 'square moon'. u
| Oh yes, you´re allowed, Koen ! | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | cedric | General discussion | |
| ... And it´s true that the most accepted definition of the difference between engineers and designers is that a designer brings a soul, an emotional dimension to the products... So... I reassure you (and myself), I don´t want to create anonymous objects... And I never did so(at least I don´t think so...). Even when I was working in the ?wonderful land of plastic boxes?, I didn´t create any anonymous product. (please don´t enclose me in the public toilets stuff...). For me, each object is a space of expression, for the designer who creates it and for the consume ... | |||||

So there I was caught in a form/function/cost argument with myself. So I made a table just like I did with lab bench one and I'm happy now. PAL, I write all this blather just in case you find yourself in the same place. If you want something truly lovely and almost a work of art, go for it. But, if you will be burying it under books, sleeping cats, slippered feet and other such stuff, then maybe ...
| I hate responding after... | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Raymond Jepson | General discussion | |
| I hate responding after... I hate responding after Koen, because I can only add so very little, but here I go. I was taught in university to do research even if clients didn't pay for it. So far, that is what I've done. My previous boss didn't understand why I needed to see people doing activities or read up on why people buy recreational equipment, but I did anyways, and on my own time. I can't point to any detail or shape and say "that's because of ____ in my researh", but I do feel that it spurred my creativity. It will sound weird to the consumers of ... | |||||
| Koen | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Koen I have to accept JL's criticism of my comment. That "I know what I like when I see it". I knew I didn't like the chair but really couldn't have defined why. I'm just an average non-designing human. But after reading your comments, I now have text to go with my gut reaction. The chair looked wrong to me in proportion and attitude. Now I can grasp why. Thanks. | |||||
| Hard water? | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | End User | General discussion | |
| Hard water? We recently put slate into ours and it came out quite well. Since slate comes in so many colors it gives you a lot of options. We didn't put slate in our shower because we have hard water and were concerned that it may make difficult to clean. | |||||
| Functional & Beautiful, I will specify it | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Designman | General discussion | |
| Functional & Beautiful, I will specify it It's a very nice chaise lounge; I like Sculptural aspect of the front legs, and the minimalist approach of the design. Thanks for pointing this product out I had never seen it before and I think I will use it for my present interior design project. If I didn't know better I would said this is a modern classic. | |||||
| I made them | 1 Relevance | 23 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| I made them It was pretty simple. Plywood cubes, casters, foam batting, some upholstery fabric remnants and a staple gun. did them in a weekend, spent about $200 for all materials to make three at 18x18x18 inches. didn't try to do a tray topper, but that ought be only a bit more complicated if you use some decent finished ply. | |||||
