| ... I could NOT get comfortable. There was a reason why it did not win the 1948 competition for organic furniture, and the same reason why Herman Hiller didn't produce them. That reason is because as furniture, it sucks. As a piece of sculpture, it rocks. I still enjoy the Archipenko derived shape, but I will never sit in one again. By the way. Modernica is already making copies of the Vitra one, and they are spot on. Just a suggestion, why not change it by 20%, making it your design. Make it out of carbon fiber. then you aren't just another jackhole trying to ... | |||||

| pics are still up The Pics I posted at the lottalivin forum of the Kirkpatrick house are still up...they are in the midwest section on the third page in a folder labled Nelson/Chadwick. The home with the ramps is in NYC and was built in '46 if I remember correctly. It had "floating/bouncy" ramps. I do not recall the name of the client. Helmsley? Holmsby? Welby? I have just recently read "George Nelson: the design of modern design" and there is at least one pic of this house in it. I also recall having seen a layout of it in another pub. but do not remember which one. I think that alot of design like what came out of the Nelson office has been colaborated on...didn't the bent plywood chairs produced by plycraft all fall under the name Cherner when some were designed by mulhauser? Or was that just bad info on the part of collectors of the furniture. I thought I had read at one time that the manufacturer wanted to stay with one designer name so the public would not get confused...OK, I'm confused. | |||||

This will have to suffice for now. For some reason learning he made the logo made me feel much better about his situation. Although he didn't get the acclaim he deserves his design is one every single piece of Herman Miller furniture. His early Herman Miller ads are fun too. I wonder how long he did these. I find it interesting his design (the sofa) fetches so much money these days. Good for ...

| ... pronouncable one, without any strong ethnic flavor. Yet somehow it gets ruined on a regular basis. My husband's name, which I didn't take, clearly shows his Slavic/Russe heritage. Lots of consonants used in an unfamiliar way. He puts up with all kinds of mangling of his name. Personally, I think that your name is the one thing besides your face that it yours. You may share it with others, but you deserve to have it said correctly. So I shall practice saying 'Koen'. As for Stephen....I've never figured out how that gets turned into Steven. Nor have I underst ... | |||||

| What motivated you to buy from them? What motivated you to buy from them and not others? How many companies did you research or talk to? What made you decide to wait instead of buying it from another supplier who had it in stock? Where is the chair made? Seems like you got lucky whereas I got screwed with my online purchase. Just looking for therapy and consolation in here. I wish I had found this bulletin board before I wasted my money on crap imitations. I saw a nice picture of the Barcelona chair at an unbelievable price while cruising ONLINE. It WAS ... | |||||

| koen, SDR, and Olive Thank you much for suggestions so far! You guys have given me new information and things I didn't even consider. I am actually looking into koen's suggestion regarding cutting into the gyp at the ceiling and floor and raising the baseboards, etc. This obviously would be more than a weekend project, but I always like to try solutions I haven't tried before. Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions and taking time to share your knowledge. You guys rock! | |||||

| I sat in a replica here at a... I sat in a replica here at a local store (Bova, St. Louis) and the cushions are not firm at all and you can feel the bar across the back through the cushion. It looked really nice and looked like good craftsmanship. Metal was finished nice and the seams on the cushions were strong. Not very comfortable. I was having the same delima you are having and I'm glad I didn't buy a fake. | |||||

I am going to get a deep green shag with varying tectures. Big yarn like strands along with darker skinng strands that have a sheen. I like dark green on brown....very earthy.

| The Gay Question I didn't respond to the gay question, as that particular question really didn't interest me. I thought we had already done that thread back in June. B, I actually found your "modernism and religiosity" thread a much more interesting thread but have not commented on that thread given my somewhat sparse knowledge of Western religion. | |||||

| ... Shangrila. But if you can afford it, go with DWR or find the best quality knock-off you can within your budget. Be careful about Wholesale Interiors in Illinois, too. Their crap is sold by a lot of unscrupulous online dealers and I got ripped off. They show a decent picture of the barcelona chair, but what you get is different and awful. The "X" is a fat ass square. The cushions are badly sewn with vinyl everywhere. The back cushion sticks up over 4" above the frame, like the Shang chair. Loose and thin crappy straps. Rough polishing. I wanted to r ... | |||||

| Columnist needs your help Hello Keon and Futuroman, I write a weekly column for the Globe and Mail, a national daily paper based in Toronto, called "The Architourist". One of my favourite things to write about is post-war Modernist homes. I've always loved the Futuro but didn't think there was any in Canada! I get up to Montreal about 2 - 3 times a year and would LOVE to get the story of this house, take a bunch of photos and interview the owners. Keon, is there any way you can be more specific about the exact location of the place (maybe give me a link t ... | |||||

Also, there are the initials "O.K." on the underside of the frame and he says: The initials on the marking are "O.K.". I've asked a Barcelona dealer in Los Angeles and have been told that this is a most likely the seller's ID. The chairs manufactured before the Knoll production model (pre-1950) didn't have manufacturer's labels. Any ideas?

| ... like the old "Stop-Drop-and Roll" fire drill movies from primary school. I, personally, have a nasty reaction to formaldehyde ever since anatomy courses in college. I do try to avoid being around it, I make my hubby cut the MDF for example, but I'll still use the stuff, the out-gassing is pretty minimal, really. But don't ask me to live with carpeting, that stuff is very bad for my asthma. I almost ended up on the ER when I visited my sister's new house that was loaded with new wall-to-wall. I certainly don't expect her to rip it up, nor do I expect the car ... | |||||

| Personally it wouldn't surprise me to find a majority of artists/designers on the athiest/agnostic rolls. (I'm amused by the cries of "liberal media bias" from the right; didn't they think that an open-minded and educated professional group would see through at least some of their shenanigans, sooner or later?) | |||||
