I didn't realize the molding in my LR wasn't made of wood until two months ago when I went to take it down before painting the living room. The molding is glued to the wall and the ceiling! Since the molding wasn't ornate, I've decided to live with it . . . but only for the next two years, and then I'm ripping it out as part of a full reno with the kitchen.

As Nelson describes, "At some point we left -- we were suddenly all tired, adn we'd had a little bit too much to drink -- and the next morning I came back, and here was this roll of drafting baper, and Irving and I looked at it, and somewhere in this roll there was the ball clock. I don't know to this day who cooked it up. I know it wasn't me. It might have been Irving, but he didn't think so .. . . We ...

| I once found a ... rare Lyfa hanging lamp designed by Finn Juhl at a local fleamarket. It was the more rare two-tone blue version, though the lamp is in itself very rare. I almost didn't buy it because it was simply to good to be true when I saw it there on a seller's table. I couldn't believe my own eyes. Anyway, I bought for $45 and sold it at an auction for $800. A good price considering it had bumps, paint chips and some rust. | |||||

| I think a certain few Risom... I think a certain few Risom pieces are same league, but if we are talking about his whole body of work I agree. I love his webbed chairs, his early tables and storage units. These days, George Nelson is my favorite. Although he didn't design all of the pieces for his firm, his vision, designer selection, and the pieces he did himself are among my all time favorites. | |||||

| gross Umm, okay - those have got to be the nastiest looking Barcelona chairs. These say 'caveat emptor' all over them. I didn't see a link to DWR, but rather I did notice they plagiarized DWR's description exactly. I doubt these are the chairs DWR carries, if that's what you were originally inquiring. If God is in the details, it seems shangrila is in need of a good exorcism. | |||||

| ... if, in fact, it actually was Bucky's idea. He appropriated ideas that already existed by simply renaming them. The Archimedean solid known for centuries as "cuboctahedron" became for Bucky the "Vector Equilibrium". Kenneth Snelson's invention of "floating compression" structures became Bucky's "tensegrity." There is even a faceted polyhedral "geodesic dome" which predates Bucky's "invention" or whatever, but the builder of the dome did not concieve of the structural advantages existing in the form. The shape of the domes is a polyhedral faceting that h ... | |||||

| Well! You have defended the man well, while acknowledging his shortcomings. I'll focus on your point that it is difficult to get anything done in this world, and that it take great perseverence and willpower to accomplish anything at all, and even more of same to have everythig as you would like it. I find it a miracle that one can make a living as an architect, when the bulk of the money connected with each job goes into material and labor for the object designed. And the extra energy and risk required to be uncompromising in the design and satisfactory ... | |||||

| Kahn's "From Silence to Light" I didn't see the film, but my reading of From Silence to Light ten years ago convinced me of the man's genius. I lived in San diego for a time and I used to go to the Salk Institute whenever I had a spare moment. It is an easy project to love. Appreciation of the nearby dorms eluded me until I read his books. Any artist who can grapple organically, elegantly, beautifully and profoundly with the sense of time in the static media (painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design) is worthy of our awe. Of course he had serious f ... | |||||

| Now I'm stuck. . .because I really can appreciate the thought of having the "right" one, which, for my money, would be the last designer's prototype, with his subsequent notes, if any. Next best would be a very early production version -- or, to some, this WOULD be best. She did say, didn't she, that the first atempt at an Eames Lounge Chair "copy" wasn't even diMENSIONALLY accurate? Given that , I agreed with your two posts on the issue a little better than any other. Kinda shows there really is a spectrum of beliefs, and issues, involved. . . Gracias SD ... | |||||

| Design didn't bring us together, but it has certainly played a role in keeping us there. Having similar sensibilities as well as goals and desires for our lives, gives us both a strong sense of bonding. We are good companions. It is both our shared and separate interests that make us this way. How we live is an expression of what we are. | |||||

| You think so, but it's not true The ring is where the condensate pools but it forms all over the surface. You will end up with a circular/square spot of haze in the 'drain'. They are cool looking though. I've been using cd's from all the AOL offer I get in the mail. At first I didn't fill the hole and learned my lesson. Now I back them with something (duct tape works well). They're free and they look pretty good. | |||||

I mention this, because in the mists of my memory--25 years ago or so--I attended a lecture by Bucky Fuller given at the Marin Civic Center (the beautiful pinkish F.L. Wright one with the acqua roof) where, I believe, in his logorrhial way of speaking, he momentarily went on a tangent about how geodesics were actually hexagons joined by a pentagon. Of course, Bucky didn't stop there...he added humbly that the universe itself would one day be revealed to be constructed of a lattice of hexagons. ...

Browsing around at a local consignment store, I came across a cool little modernist antelope sculpture which I bought for $4. Later I found out it was a Frederick Weinberg piece (and a nice one in that it didn't have that retro kitsch thing going). 3. I was driving past another junk store in town one day and they had three yellow Eames shell chairs sitting out front. I went and bought them ($40 total) an ...

There is lots of other info to be found (CableRail is a brand name) on various systems. Another source would be boat-builders and their chandleries (suppliers), if you live near a coast or shore.
