| beste koen i use this site to gain knowledge (yes thx to contributors as yourself; amazing how far your knowledge reaches) and to have an open window on designartefacts that i didn't knew; for eg your sons fruitbowl; without this site i would never have seen it. and that is in my eyes the strenght of this site; no stateboundaries, a view around the globe. also nice to do is to click on one of the pics of a designer at random and then go to their sites and ...discover their work | |||||

| I am a big fan of Karim... I am a big fan of Karim Rashid..(who isnt lol)??? I didn't know that everyone was a fan of Karim Rashid? Is that true? I'm not. Btw, your question on everyone's "likeness toward Australian designers" make it sound like all Aussies have the same style, so there's no difference if a firm hires you or another Aussie designer. I know you didn't mean that but the point you brought up yourself kind of implies that. | |||||
| Nelson bench, no contest | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| Nelson bench, no contest I love mine, for the same reason that whitespike does, the form plays with light very interestingly. It's just so interesting to look at I never get tired of it. The shape is minimal/asian, classic mid-century and yet completely timeless. My cats love to whack at each other through the slats so at least they don't find it a p.i.t.a. to sit on. Since Nelson didn't intend for it to be comfortable, I agree that it fuunctions better as a table. By contrast the Bertoia bench seems pop-arty to me and therefore not as interesting. | |||||
| For Olive: Part 2 | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| ... longer were designed in. Europe soon after WWII didn't have unlimited resources to keep stamping out replacement cars every two years, so Mercedes built long lived cars and tried to make their money both on a premium up front and repair parts revenue streams over time. No doubt, certain things were designed to go out to keep the register ringing, but most of the car was designed to last. It made good business sense at the time. It satisfied European consumer tastes that had long been accustomed to quality over quantity. And in other markets, where shorter p ... | |||||

| In no way am I criticising your English...Part 2 I assure you the privilege is all mine. Post Script: I too find discussions of artifacts here a little short on the technical how-and-why? I just assumed it was, because designers were all speaking in some short hand I didn't get, or found mastering the obvious too boring. As the resident village idiot of this site, I would greatly appreciate more technical how-and-why discussion of the issues by persons who obviously have the knowledge to do it. I used to run into this same problem when I was studying literat ... | |||||

| SDR, I certainly leaped to the conclusion that... the furniture and the setting were coordinated to create the look that results. It never occurred to me that a designer would intentionally showcase his furniture in a room it didn't go well with. I stand corrected, if the designer was on a shoestring budget and had to put it in the first flat that was handy. I do find this improbable though, don't you? Also, I apologize for the quality of caustic criticsim. Its something I try to avoid and failed at this time. Frankly, I think this furntiure of the Bouroulle ... | |||||

| Oh, DC you would have to do more than that, to provoke me. (Actually, I don't know what an agent provocateur is -- is that somehow related to real estate misrepresentation, like calling tile "hand set" or fancy wood veneer "burled". . .?) I suppose someone might have done something original with slip covers; where's Olive when we need her ? Hope I didn't scare away a real answer to your innocent (?) query. . . SDR | |||||

| The closing price: $1050 | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | Olive | General discussion | |
| The closing price: $1050 However, I didn't bid. I am going to get his chair, though. I've been looking for years for the right reading chair and this one is the most comfortable one I've tried. Fits my large self, is comfortable enough for long reading marathons and looks like a piece of sculpture when not in use. What could be better? I am also lucky enough to have a connection that can get me a brandy-new 'real' Knoll version for a steal. Now if I could only find the perfect coffee table, my home furnishing quest would be at its end! | |||||

Now that I have lived with the typical Eames/Knoll/case study program obsession for a while I have been letting my head turn in other directions. I think it is a natural cycle. So this traditional old world meets modern contradiction is a newer concept to me. My interest in it has been bubbling up for the last 2 or 3 years. Seeing designs like this have quenched my aesthetic thirst for this type of design. While it may be tired and old in relation to design in general, it seems f ... | |||||
| Laurel Mushroom Lamp | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| Laurel Mushroom Lamp This lamp is perfect for my needs. That's one of the reasons I am so excited to have received it. The switch is fine. I've only owned this lamp for a week, so I didn't even look at that until I read the post. The mushroom will be perfect in my bedroom. We have a classic 1965 Eichler-ish one story house. This lamp has been calling to come to my home for the last 3 years. I like not have to fish around for a cord. That is what I am dealing with now and it is not good in the middle of the night when you are trying not to disturb someone els ... | |||||
| There's plenty of affodable design out there | 1 Relevance | 21 years ago | Luckner | General discussion | |
| ... I couldn't afford it. Instead I went for items by less know designers. They were not as famous, but the quality of the workmanship was beyond compare. I could have bought a fake Arne Jacobsen egg chair, but I didn't because I happen to know why an original is as expensive and as famous as it is. First it was designed in 1958 and the shape was revolutionary for that date. Secondly AJ spent hours and hours developing this chair. With respects to the way it is made at Fritz Hansen I can tell you that the cow hides used to upholster the egg chair are so high qu ... | |||||
