| In scanning Esther McCoy (she's the Original Authority on the Case Study program) I can find only this: "new aircraft glues made a variety of laminates a reality. . ." The steel houses of Soriano, Elwood and Koenig seem to have derived from prewar experiments by Mies, Neutra and others -- no mention is made of that material being either more or less available as a result of the war (the program was inaugurated seven months before the end of the war). McCoy does mention the poor quality (and quantities) of conventional materials to be had at that time. . . If the pent-up desire for new houses and housing types, both by architects and by the public, resulting from the interruption of the war, can be said to be that war's influence on the new architecture, then you are right. . . I hadn't heard about Risom's use of parachute webbing; as one who is ever suspicius of what designers say about their motivations, I would point to Aalto and other Scandinavians as the more likely influence on his use of webbing ! But perhaps I am overly cynical. . . Let's see: War. . .war. . .how about the desire of every red-blooded American to have a gun in the nightstand ? (Didn't a major designer show lamps with rifles at their core, last year ?) I'm failing to think of further examples. And it seems such a potent subject. . . | |||||

Speaking of, I bought two very comfortable looking pairs of sandals at banana republic (on sale) and they STILL haven't broken in and are STILL uncomfortable and I am upset as you can see. It is like the robbed the look of a comfy sandal but made them inentionally impractible and impossible to wear for a long time, god forbid more than one fashion season, so you have to buy ...

| some thoughts Part 2 Daimler Chrysler's 300C has proven a hit, likely because it is about the only truly new and different sedan the American car companies have attempted. It tries to be a graphic novel version of a gangsta car and succeeds quite nicely at that. Why 30-50 year old adults with families want that look must have to do with some psycho-perversity discovered by DaimlerChrysler's marketing geeks. But though its found a niche of happy buyers, the fact remains it proportions make it look like it ran into a cement wall and then backed up into another ... | |||||

| No worries Vivienne.... No worries Vivienne. Hopefully I didn't sound harsh. My first choice would be the original design but have found something to tide me over until that time for a relatively small amount. Thanks for the interest. | |||||

| vicarious thrills! We bought a house before the holidays (growing family) and haven't sold the old house yet. Financially things are a bit "tight" since I am paying both mortgages ( ouch ).Because of my microeconomic deficit spending, my wife and I didn't exchange gifts. HOWEVER, not just 15 minutes ago, and I swear by God this is true, I picked up a pair of Saarinen model 71 chairs by Knoll in perfect condition with all the proper labels. They even have the union stickers on the bottom from the guys who built them. Here is the envy-provocation part; I bough ... | |||||

| I've never been hurt by a picture of a chair before... but this is the furniture equivalent of Medusa. To wit: "Medusa was...once very beautiful and lived far in the north where the sun didn't visit. Being very curious, she wanted to see the sun, and asked the Goddess Athena for permission to visit the south. Athena refused to allow her to visit. The medusa got angry and dared to say that Athena hadn't given her permission because she was jealous of her beauty. that was it! Athena was angered and punished her by turning her hair into snakes and cursing her b ... | |||||

| good point Well put whitespike - and I love my knoll table and appreciate its honesty and quality (granted it is a bit heavy to move - which I don't mind). However, one point I didn't make clear was that I intentionally did not want to spend a lot of money (partly because I have no money, leaving me with little options) and so my intent was to be true to that, and not try to cover up that I used inexpensive lumber and such, not necessarily be honest to its simple form (but I guess I am unintentionally). I understand what you are saying though. And you ... | |||||

And Kahn liked to bring things from silence to light--a strange but resonant transcending of two senses that one gets when one looks into the half lighted half darkened voids of his structures. In contrast, Cho likes to emulate the undesigned quality of certain decrepit prairy structures less than a century old located near Bozeman, Montana. He finds something noble about these barns and grain elevators and stick houses. He finds the ...

| I will think on this... and get back to you in a week. For now I will try to distill your brilliant richness of detail to a few of essenses: 1) You designed a better mouse trap with out a fitting retail outlet. This I suspect was the blow that killed the victim. Why? Because it eventually killed Rosti too. Your product got caught in a paradigmn shift from high service retail outlets to low service retail outlets. It lost its foot traffic and needed high service to sell it. It needed Rosti healthy to push it. The market place has found a place today for produ ... | |||||

| west elm platform bed I have the West Elm Platform bed. I like it. I like the simple lines and minimalist design. Also, the price didn't break the bank. Eventually, I will replace it when I find a bed I go gaga over(which hasn't happened yet). However, for a bed to use for three-five years, the price was just right. Anyway, I'm more interested in decorating my LR and DR right now so most of my money is going there. I'll get around to really decorating my BR in a few years. | |||||

| ... Sunlight. The design of rooms leading to another and another is a French term called 'enfilade', which translates to 'in file' or 'in line'. Designers often utilize color to connect or surprize the eye in rooms arranged like this. Think of what it would be like if you were in your living room looking through the dining room to the room at the end and it's a vibrant red or something like that and you are looking past golden-toned walls. It would be quite interesting to look at. And you bring that far room all the way back into your living room just with the ... | |||||

When I complained the seller in the exclusive furniture store asked me: "Did you used the chair?" I was young at that time so I didn't know what to answer. One or two years later I found another LC4 and two LC1 on a sale at the big department store NK in Stockholm. In those days I had never heard of another manufacturer than Cassina so I bought these chairs too. Later I found out that they ...
